Scary day

We had to go out and run some errands earlier. Well, when we got home, our front door was wide open. Nothing was missing, so we guessed that we didn't shut it well and the wind blew it open (it was windy today). Then, we thought about Jasper. We didn't see him anywhere in the yard. We were so worried. Jason (my hubby) looked around our yard while I looked in the house. He was no where to be found. I was in tears by this point.

Allie, our cat, jumps on the window sill and starts pawing at it (she was outside). We let her in, and not 5 minutes later, we hear him barking. Thank goodness, he was in the house safe & sound. He had fallen asleep under our bed, and I guess he either chose to ignore us or didn't hear us when we were calling for him. He always answers to us.

I was so worried we had lost him though. I'm REALLY surprised he wasn't outside since the door was open. As much as he hates his kennel, I think even for quick trips, he's going in it now. It was scary thinking about what could have happened today. Too bad he can't just go everywhere with us.

Glad to hear Jasper is alright!

He is a cutie!
I'm glad things worked out for you. These things happen to remind us of just what could happen. We had the same thing happen to us last year. We live in a very rural area. Our front door didn't latch all the way and Abby was sitting under our oak tree in the front of our house with a very forlorn look about her. My neighbor called and said Abby wouldn't let him get close to either her or the front door. He waited in the front yard with her (sitting in his truck) to make sure she didn't go in the road. As soon as I got home she ran up to him for butt rubs just like he was her best friend. She has never shown any signs of agression, but I guess she was just looking out for what was hers.

Don't beat yourself up over this. Things like this will happen.

Live and learn, I know I have.
Wow... It's a good thing that Jasper was OK, it can happen to anyone. Last year I didn't close the yard door and Lennon got out and was running in the park like crazy. When he got tired he started pawing the front door, that's how we knew he got out... Boy, did I get it that day...
That is such a scary feeling! I'm glad Jason is all right! Part of our fence isn't as high as the rest of the fence (zonong restrictions). We didn't think about the fact that Bentley's running back and forth would pack the snow under him and make him even higher behind the fence. The first it occured to us was when one of the neighbor kids rang our doorbell and there on the front porch was the girl and BENTLEY! She went up to the fence to pet him and he jumped over to see her. Needless to say, when we get a lot of snow we are out there right away breaking up the snow so that he can't go over.
I'm so glad your puppy is ok. That's enough to scare anyone.
Thank goodness he was sleeping. I hate that panicked feeling.
Thank goodness Jasper is safe!
How terrifying! I would've been in tears too... I'm so glad he is safe and sound.
When I started to read your post I held my breath - I figured you wouldn't be posting if you were still looking.

ANYWAY, just wanted to let you know I've been there too. My first OES, Penelope was an escape artist, you didn't have to leave doors open, she had figured out how to open the handles and knobs. So if it wasn't locked- she was out! The good news is that if she did escape she usually ended up on the back porch. A neighbor once observed her opening the gate to the alley, she thought one of us was in the yard so she just watched the dog thinking nothing of it. She said that Penelope opened the gate, went into the alley, sniffed around, stood up on the garbage can and sniffed around, loped back around and went back into the yard. Sure enough I found her on the back porch and the gate was swinging in the wind.

Of course I was horrified to think she could have been gone in the blink of an eye, but they are the most amazing little homebodies. Your baby proved it.

Up.
Thank goodness he's safe. I know that feeling too. My Beardie, Lucy, got out once when the wind blew open the screen door. I was in another part of the house and didn't realize it. I had no idea how long she had been gone so I immediately ran outside when she didn't come when I called. I used to live right by a very busy road so I was already almost in tears. I ran up the street looking for her and she was no where to be found. Here's the happy ending: about 5 minutes later I found her. In our subdivision, we had a big walking trail maybe half a mile long, that went around a pond. As soon as I got up over the rise to see the trail, I see Lucy, walking the trail, all by herself just like we used to do all the time. She wasn't sniffing or messing around, she was walking with a purpose-- like she was attached to a leash. She was just following the routine she knew! I was so upset for her taking off but to see her on that trail was one of the cutest (and most relieving) things I'd ever seen. I never realized how much she loved taking walks there. It kind of makes me wonder if she would've followed our normal route right back home again but I don't think I'd want to take that chance!
Whew! Just like our kids sometimes we just want to say what the heck were you thinking....then give em a big hug, so glad they are safe. Not quite what happened to Jasper but everyone can understand that fear and helplessness. I'm so glad to hear it all turned out well.

Gail,
Don't know how I missed this post before, but just wanted to say how very glad I am that Jasper is safe and sound, and that he didn't "get when the gettin' was good"!!  Drez is (or more appropriate, now - was) my little escape artist. :? We put her in the enclosed deck one night and went out to the movies. When we came home, there she laid, under the apple tree by the driveway, just waiting for us to come home! Little bugger! 8O

Thanks everyone. He's hardly been here a month and already terrifying us. LOL Glad to hear I'm not alone in this...made me feel so awful! I'm just sooo grateful he's safe and sound, and we know to be extra careful for now on when leaving the house. He's definitely worked his way into all of our hearts these past few weeks. :)
