Not Again

Now that I have survived the last Health scare (possible Leukemia) I have been informed that I am Pre-Diabetic. I'm ready to throw in the towel. Regardless of the cause, I now have 3 months to lose 21lbs (possible) which my DR claims will lower my sugar into the normal range again. I am unable to eat any type of white bread product, ie pasta, rice, bread and potatoes. Thankfully there are alternative whole wheat products that I already enjoy. But no alternative for the potato. I also cannot touch sweets. I have found Sugar Free candy which turned out to be pretty satisfying. I am currently grieving my past diet and feeling alittle depressed. How much does one person have to endure? I feel like God is trying to get me on my knees. Am I right?

You poor thing... coming from an Irish background, I couldn't even consider not having potatos! I can honestly say that while I lived at home with my parents I never went a day without potatos of some fashion; baked, au graten'd, boiled, mashed, totted... etc.

I hope you find a satisfying alternative.
Is there some reason the potato is excluded?
Usually potatoes are just a regular carb - and not too bad. It's all the stuff that gets added to a potato that usually causes all the damage.
Eating a few foods that are important to you is an option, if you can manage it in moderation.
Potato has a high "glycemic index" as it turns into blood glucose ery rapidly causing a huge spike both in serum glucose and also the need for the pancreas to secrete vast amounts of insulin quickly.

You should look into trying the Atkins diet. You will feel satisfied, you will rest your pancreatic beta cells, you will lose a ton of weight, you will improve your blood lipid profile, your blood pressure will decrease rapidly and you will likely put off any diabetes for many years.

Or not. ;)

What's a totted potato???
My greatgrandmother was Irish so I thought I knew all about potatos. Obviously there is a gap in my education.

I was wondering the same thing!

You should look into the IR diet (insulin resistance). There are lots of things that are actually really good (I've heard, I haven't actually done it).

And it's okay to mourn your old diet. It's been a part of your life. But try not to think about this new diet as a diet. Just think of it as a way to make and keep you healthy for a lifetime. Don't focus on the foods you can't have, but on the ones you can.

And I'm sure once you get things under control you'll be able to have splurges of things.

So sorry you're upset, though.

Well, being a carb, I knew that was true. I was thinking more along the lines of carbs in general, that it was better than a cookie, (or a twinkie!), pop, or something really evil like that.

Sometimes the thought of giving something up entirely is so overwhelming.
Other times it is better to give it up entirely - as taking one bite can prove too much and start a whole binge attack!

I found having limited portions of the things I really enjoy to work - most of the time :( MOST of the time.......

All carbs are not equal.
