My advice is....GET THE INSURANCE!!!!
We have the plan through the AKC. Its called pet Partners. They have different options with different coverage for different prices. We have the Basic insurance for my 3 year old which covers mainly illness and emergencies and prescriptions. Does not cover well visits, heartworm, shots. The cost is about 350 a year. Unfortunately I've had to use it alot and I can tell you they've paid me back thousands. They do not nickel and dime you with all sorts of co-pays like some other companies and are very easy to deal with. You pay the Vet and then you fill out a form, the Vet signs it and you submit with your paid bill. I ahve the Wellness plan on my puppy. Was more expensive but covered her spaying and shots and heartworm, etc. You need to look over the options and decide which is best for you. I can tell you, one visit to the emergency will cost you thousands. My pup ate something and got very sick and I had to take her to the emergency. She stayed overnight. Bill was over 15 hundred bucks. Her x rays at her regular vet cost $150 I think. I recommend insurance highly. It would be terrible to have something happen and you cannot afford to help her. If you go to the akc.org website, scroll down to the insurance link and everything will be there for you to read. www.akc.org |
You know I think it depends on where you are located and how much your vet charges. My sister has insurance on one of her dogs and it pays off. Even with my male's health issues I don't think I would have broken even on premiums vs coverage. I don't use emergency vets because i have my own vet's personal cell and although I support him in a nice lifestyle, premiums for four dogs would way out pace my costs. |
