http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/lyme/Pr ... ontrol.htm I'd start with the least toxic and go from there. Talk with your vet and make sure your dog is healthy before applying a topical. And test your dog's blood annually, maybe more frequently if ticks are a big problem in your area. You can read about how serious tick disease is in dogs at the first link above. Earlier this year, three dogs came into rescue... looking back at notes, this individual stated they had tick problems. All three dogs tested positive for Anaplasmosis, Lyme on the day they entered rescue... two dogs had both. |
After all these years Frontline continues to work miracles for us. The number I find on all four dogs is less than a dozen all season.....compared to one dog getting 12 a day everyday before Frontline came out.
Other folks prefer to fight ticks by food supplements : Dietary additions for boosting immunity and repelling bugs: ** A half teaspoon of nutritional brewer's yeast daily can provide the B complex vitamins a dog needs. Dr. Michael Fox has recommended brewer's yeast or nutritional yeast (but not baker's yeast), giving 1 teaspoon per 30 pounds of body weight mixed with the animal's food. ** B complex vitamins - 50 mg once a day for cats and smaller dogs, and twice daily for larger dogs. ** Use Omega 3 and 6 fatty acid supplements. ** Add a tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar to the dog's water bowl. ** Add .a teaspoon each of safflower oil and powdered kelp or seaweed to the food bowl. ** Fresh garlic in small quantities can help repel fleas by making the animal taste unpleasant to fleas. Grate a small amount of fresh, raw garlic into your pet's food at mealtime, about one-half to 3 chambers of the clove (chamber, not a whole clove) depending on the animal's size. One vet recommends one crushed clove of garlic (not a whole bulb; a clove is just one chamber) per every 30 pounds. Some holistic health practitioners recommend heating the garlic for easier digestion, and to not to give them garlic every day. I'd think taking a preventative approach by cleaning as much of the dog's territory of tick habitats would help. Would I use Permethrin spray........with prejudice and caution. Dogs would be in the house, yard sprayed and dogs would be walked elsewhere for 24 hours until the spray had dried. Even then I'd be monitoring the dogs for a few days. For years I used Dursban in the dog yard without a problem but I was careful and took every precaution. Now Frontline does it for us. |
Where is he picking up the ticks? At a park, along the road, in your own yard or elsewhere? |
He's currently on Advantix because Frontline wasn't working and made his skin SO oily. On top of that I've been using the Frontline spray just between his toes.
I think he's getting them from our yard and we've treated. He was great for a couple months but now they're back again. And he doesn't really go anywhere because I'm still working on the socializing & being able to control him. I am such a hypochondriac w/ him though way back when I saw the first tick I started him on the Lyme vaccine. So he gets that yearly. So that's one less stress on this department. |
Once you've treated the yard and removed tall brush, if you create a three foot barrier of wood chips around the perimeter, they say that will prevent re-infiltration. Of course I don't know if that's practical for your property. |
Sadly my property doesn't allow the 3 ft wall of wood chips.
I'm nervous about the garlic only because it is toxic to pets...I'm really shocked a vet would recommend that because the vets @ my practice don't. Hmmm. I'll be hitting up the do it yourself pest control store this weekend and see if they have anything good. It's sad when Riley's already learned the command "let mommy get it" when she has tweezers in her hand. |
Lol it's not a wall it's an area of wood chip mulch three feet wide along the ground probably only 2 or 3 inches tall. |
Ha ha ha. I was trying to imagine the wall...and I couldn't think of anyones property that would allow that and not look odd. That makes more sense and something I might be able to pull off. Thanks! |
I agree re: garlic. Continual isn't a good idea. How about Brewer's yeast instead? |
