My OES Lennon now spends most of his time outside. Even if we leave the door open for him to stay inside, he just drops by and goes out again. He has an old injury on his shoulder that makes him limp when it's too cold, but since he refuses to go inside, I'd like to hear tips on getting his house ready for winter so he's more comfy. We've given him glucosamine supplements and enteric aspirin in the past when he get too bad... Anything else that may help? Thanks! |

Uhhh............. how about a HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LONG TIME NO SEE!! You've been gone for ages ...ever since you guys had a kid to be exact. How is the family? It's just nice to see you post
I'm sorry to hear about his shoulder, but you can't help but chuckle at the "get ready for winter in tx." How about a big orthopedic bed from jbpets or petco? Then top it off with a warm shirt over him to cover that shoulder? |
Welcome back Saul! We need pictures of the baby who isn't a baby anymore!
As far as his dog house, I would think an insulated bed would be of great help. Anything that keeps him off the cold floor. |
I couldn't believe you were posting! Long time and yes, we've missed you!
I like Jo's idea of some type of garment over the shoulders. It doesn't have to go far down the back, just provide an extra bit of warmth. Yes, an orthpedic bed would be great. If he has an open door dog house, retrofitting an angled entry to keep the wind from blowing in might help. Of course you can add an insulating layer under the dog house to keep it from direct ground contact. Other supplements, our vet highly recommends fish oil or omega 3's for older dogs. Lennon decide living with a young child is too stressful? |
What would the dosage be for Omega 3 for a 90 lb. dog? Thanks. |
A cover like these would be great if it's going to be outside to keep the dampness out:
http://www.cryptonfabric.com/pet-beds/cat-dog-beds.do We have everything Crypton in the house now sine it holds no moisture and no stink. It's not super cheap but it lasts and really does everything it says it does. We had a decent amount of success using Metacam with Lucy when she was getting old and achy, too (through the vet). |
hahaha... i know, like Winter in TX is a big deal for a Sheepie... Temps don't go too much below 30 degrees here, but Lennon can feel the pain some days. He already has an orthopedic bed but he likes to chew on it rather than sleep on it... go figure. He prefers the cold fool but as he's getting older I'm afraid his leg may hurt more.
I'm going to insulate the house and place it over 4 blocks to keep it away from the floor and I'll see about the omega 3... Anybody knows what will the dose be? I uploaded pictures of Our Daughter and my other two furry kids. As soon as they are approved by Ron I'll put up a post, okay? |
Approved.
SAUL!!!!!!! I've missed you guys around the forum for so long! Marielena is SOOO big now, and gorgeous ! Nice to see you, thanks for the pics. |
good to see you again
For my old ones I use glucosamine/chondroitin daily. I have one not liking the plain tabs, so I am trying a gel capsule with much better luck. Of course, it is a more expensive brand! Nature Made Triple Flex - it is glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid. Dosing is one tab/day/dog. (Human dose is 2/day) http://tripleflex.com/ |
Thanks a lot Ron! You... she's really big now! She's already 3 1/2.
The pics are posted on the Pictures Section, take a look if you have a chance. I'm going to check out those Gelcaps and see how they go. As pain relievers, the occasional enteric aspiring fixes him, but I'm wondering if there's anything safer for him? |
