I feel so bad because I had him on Frontline Plus and he didnt get fleas at all. Never scratched or anything. Then I had learned that Frontline is extremely toxic and supposedly bad for the dog...? So I took him off it and went the natural route and bought this spray - its like cinnamon and clove, $20 a bottle. You have to use it once a week and completely soak the dog making sure you get all the skin. I would use almost the entire bottle with him because of how big he is. It was a total pain in the BUTT but I did it. All the while... he somehow got fleas! The natural stuff obviously doesnt work... I just dont know what to do. I feel like I have no other option than to put him back on Frontline. What does everyone else use? Is Frontline really bad for dogs? HELP HELP HEELLLLLLLP! |

Oh and I almost forgot... When I was giving Beemer Frontline, the vet tech or assistant - whatever, said I needed to buy the one for 88-130 lbs, but Beemer only weights 77. She said because of all the hair he should use the other one. Does this seem logical? Has anyone ever heard of this before? |
I feel your pain! I have fortunately never had fleas until last week, which is a miracle in itself considering I am always at the dog shows. My children found a 5 week old kitten in our front yard. I was not at home at the time, so of course my husband let them take it inside. Well voila, it had fleas and since it was in my home, my dogs had fleas. Absolute nightmare and a very expensive lesson. I went to my vet and purchased Advantage for everyone. Now most of my guys are in full show coat and we did not increase the dosage because of that. It simply goes by bodyweight. |
Uh, I feel your pain... Asterisk and Wendel got their first fleas two weeks ago. I was grooming them and found one a piece on their necks. I couldn't find more, but since they are in full coats, it's pretty understandable. What tipped me off as to the problem was all the flea dirt I saw. Flea dirt looks like little black speckles on their skin. Of course, I had to treat the two dogs and the four cats.
It can take a few days for the frontline to be effective. It took four days till I saw no evidence of fleas or dirt. I don't like to keep the dogs on flea medication, but with the weather getting colder, until the frost hits, I just may have to. I was watching Beverly Hills Groomer last year and a tip that Artist Knox gave was using Lemon Juice, or other citris juices to bathe the dogs with and that would kill off fleas. I have no idea if that would work and what residue that would leave in the coat. |
My vet advised using baby shampoo as often as once a week and allowing the suds to stay on "as long as possible" to kill the fleas.
We use a citrus oil based shampoo put out by Happy Jack when we have a problem (in addition to the topical) And yes a vet told me if you have cats in your yard your dog will have fleas. |
