I know it's different for every dog, but I'm just wondering at what age is it common for a dog to make it through the night? I guess I should say, at least 7 to 8 hours? Clyde is now 5 1/2 months old and he's gotten good in the house and completely trustworthy in the crate up to about 6 hours. Am I just being impatient or should I be getting up to let him out during an 8 hour shift? I've been hesitant to let him out anytime during the night because I don't want him to get used to it but at the same time, I don't want him wetting himself in the crate either. He seems to get really upset when he does have an accident in there-- like he doesn't want to stay in there once he's done it. Which, of course, I can't blame him and makes me think he isn't doing it on purpose. Any thoughts? |

Are you taking away his water a couple hours before bedtime? At that age he probably has begun to have greater control over his bladder, but if mistakes do happen too often it may become a habit.
I let the girls out one last time around 11 pm and we get up with them by 7 am , they do fine over those hours, and always have since the day I brought each of them home. (Maybe 6 am for the first couple of weeks) |
Yes, he has a water drinking problem so we always limit his water. He is cut off a minimum of 2 hours before bed. The funny thing is, it's not like a full on accident. It's almost like he really has to go and just lets a little bit out and then waits to let the rest out when I let him out in the morning. |
