He told me that he had lost his job and had to sell his house. He also has to rehome his 5 year old Old English Sheepdog named Bella. The bummer is, I've heard of him and Bella before from a mutual friend. He only lives 2 minutes from me. I may have a co-worker who would be interested in Bella. Of course, glutton that I am, I'd love to take her, but Josh said that we already have a full house. I put in a call to him and will see if I can get pictures of her. If anyone is interested, feel free to let me know. I really hope my co-worker pans out... I'd love to keep a sheepdog local... there are so few here... |

Did you contact the Illinois rescue contact?
That is very sad! |
Send me a message if Bella needs to go to rescue and Chicagoland can't take her, I'd be happy to place her. |
I know it's terrible! I just got off the phone with him and he was really choking back tears. He called her his little princess. He's going to email me pictures of her. He said that if he can't find good pictures of her, he was going to pose her on her princess bed.
I feel so terrible, he really loves her and it's shows. He's had her since she was weaned and she is his only child. |
Maybe someone could foster till he gets back on his feet. |
Love the idea of someone taking Bella in for the guy for a while. I would hate to lose my OES poor guy poor Bella, |

I was thinking the same thing too... he's a hair stylist, so right now, that's not really a profession that is fairing too well with the economic crisis. I was even telling Josh of possibly fostering her till he gets on his feet. Josh isn't sure how long that would take him and if he would agree to that with such an uncertain future. I'll keep everyone posted. I really hurt for the guy, I couldn't imagine having to be in that situation. |
please keep us posted I will keep my |
Has he contacted his breeder? |

My first thought too. The ideal thing in this type of situation is to try to find a way to help the dog stay in its home, ultimately. When people are really overwhelmed they aren't necessarily thinking clearly, and it really helps to have someone to talk things through with and to bounce ideas off of. We had a situation somewhat like this last year. Husband was having surgery, long recovery time, wild and untrained young OES, wife was overwhelmed and incredibly distraught, devastated at thought of losing dog, but could see no other way out . Since our rescue coordinator is also an OES breeder she has practice in talking her own puppy people through sensible dog management 101 and the situation was solved, in this case, with this terribly high tech device known as baby gates. Granted, a personal economic crisis is not so easily solved. But you never know. And given how he feels about her, so much better if a solution can be found. If not, please do contact Sally of Chicagoland OES Rescue. Fingers crossed. Kristine |
I know after my house fire you all helped me bounce ideas off you b/c I could not find a place to keep Holly. It is sooo sad that he is going thru this I hope someone could foster for him but I know how hard it is to give up your sheepie ... thank God at the very last minute before I was to drive Holly to Virginia to her foster I found a place that had 4 acres and allowed Holly!! It can happen for this guy too!! My fingers are crossed for him please keep us updated |
I hope someone can help this pair out.
One of my friends is doing a long term foster right now. Lynne met this pup when she had her dog Abby at daycare. The pup named Skye was always nice and friendly. Abby and Skye played well, and were "dog friends". Then Lynne found out that Skye's owner was having troubles, and voluntarily admitted herself to treatment - a 1 month inpatient program. Grandparents are taking her son, but said NO to Skye. She is new in town, no close friends and was facing returning Skye to the shelter in No MN where she got her. Lynne stepped in, and is fostering little Skye. |
I have an update for everyone! It appears that my co-worker and her family are going to meet Bella today and potentially adopt her. Jeff was pleased because she will stay local and I'm sure my co-worker will agree to visitation. |
That would be awesome. Nice rescue work all over the Midwest this weekend
Fingers crossed. Kristine |
Not to throw a damper on the adoption, but in my area here in Pennsylvania, many of the multi-breed rescues will provide free bags of dog food to people who would otherwise give up their pet due to loss of their job. |

That's a lovely gesture and I'm sure it can be of tremendous help. But generally the harder part of losing one's job is having to move, which appears to be the case here, often to a situation that does not lend itself to owning a big dog or, in many cases, any dog at all. Kristine |
I'm so happy she has been placed with your coworker! Absolutely wonderful! |
Sounds like a happy ending! |
I'm so happy your co-worker is going to adopt Bella. How does it feel to be part of your first rescue, Erin???? |
