Teeth Cleaning/Best chew bones?

Hi All!
I have been wondering.. what is the best option for keeping teeth clean? I have heard that Greenies work well but one of the members of the OES club I am a part of said they are just a mess with the OES coat.
I know that daily brushing is a big part of oral health, but I'm wondering what you give your dogs to chew on? Beemer doesnt care for rawhide, and I really dont want him to destroy the furniture, his coat, and the carpet with a messy chewing object
Suggestions?
Thx!

We use greenies for the dogs. We've never had any issues with staining or mess. Maybe my dogs are just little piggies because there isn't so much as a crumb left when they are done.

The only downside is that for the large dogs, greenies are pretty pricey. I get the 17 count from Petsmart and it costs over $30.
For raw fed dogs, the chicken necks are good because they tend to use their front teeth to chew them, unlike marrow bones which they gnaw using their molars. Even if you don't generally raw feed, you might consider adding them as treats. Mine love them.
Heres a link on greenies to read, personally I would not feed them to my dogs, new formula now but still personally I think not safe. Just as bad as rawhide chews.

Nothing beats "Natural" a good RAW marrow bone, lamb shank RAW or even as Val said Chicken necks RAW.

Even a good hard dog bikkie is better then greenies or rawhides to have them chew on to help keep tartar away.
I don't do the Greenies either.
Had a blackage with Tazz, but is was the "old" formulation. Still, it scared me and I won't give them to the dogs.

I have a friend who uses the bully sticks instead and her dogs have perfectly clean teeth and never have needed a dental. They chew them for a bit each day, then they are picked up. It does work - the dogs have immaculate white teeth!

My friends who feed raw have no dental issues either.

Oh, I forgot about those, too! My dogs love chomping on those.
I would really watch them when they are chewing the bully sticks as well - Winston threw up a three inch piece of bully stick one time - it scared me and I have never given him another one. He used to LOVE them!
We supplement the dogs food with raw bones too. It works very well, and the puppers love them. We buy them at a local pet speciality store, but meat markets will generally cut to specificaions as well.

What would you ask for when you go to the meat market?
I think it really depends on the type of chewer you have. I have an aggressive chewer and has choked on many a bully sticks and in one bite can gulp a large greenie. Pretty much any bone of ANY shape and size stinks and she can bite off large choke-able chunks.

For us, the only thing that works are big chews/tough chews at petco/petsmart.

Problem is, it did take some time before she wanted to chew them as they're not as appetizing as a real bone,. She will chew on them all day if another dog wants it, and we've only thrown one away because it got all nasty on the end. Never been able to chew them up.

But if he hadn't thrown it up, it should've digested (or at least broken down considerably) on its own, which is a bonus to the bully sticks. Stuff like rawhide just remains a giant chunk that can really do damage.
I really don't want to buy those bone-shaped rawhide products, but it really seems to be the only option around here in Mexico! I go to the market and get beef bones (big raw ones). Flash seems to enjoy them, but I had to take him last weekend to my cousin's, since I had to go on a tour. When I came back, they had given him a rawhide bone to prevent him from damaging their furniture. Now he's all crazy about the stuff.

Are natural raw beef bones safer? 'cause I get those for free!
Hi Tamara a natural raw beef bone is safer, the rawhides can be dangerous especially if they are chewing on them unsupervised. Trouble is they go soft and gooee and can slip down the throat and cause either choking or if they lodge further down a blockage.

It happened to me years ago, never will use them again. If I was not home at the time and heard my sheepie choking and being there to pull it out of her throat she would be dead.
Great to know. At least I'll get the beef bones for free... and I'll have to warn my cousin about it, he gives nothing but rawhide to their maltese...
