Saturday night we stopped at a very popular frozen custard stand. People were oohing and aahing over Harry. We got him a little bit of custard in a dish and of course he was delighted. It was raining so we stood on the side under an overhang to stay dry. This woman comes over while Harry's head is buried in the dish and says she wants to see my dog. She proceeds to pet the dog even though he is eating. I was thinking "Umm lady, you are mighty trusting assuming a dog wants to be bothered while eating". Then she says she wants to see his face and lifts his eating muzzle out of the dish. He had that dazed look in his eyes because he was in the "custard zone". Then he politely extracted his head from her hand to resume eating. At least he had manners! Tim and I could not believe that the lady would not even consider that it might be dangerous to interupt an eating dog. Not for a second did we doubt that Harry was safe but SHE did not know that. The only funny thing was she had to pull up pretty hard to get his head out of that dish. |

I'd say the "DUH" factor is alive and well down there
and Chewie would die for a canine cooler!!! ...not kill for one, however! Good boy, Harry! |

...not kill for one, however! Oh Dawn, this was not the doggie snow cone. That place is closed for the season. This was the good yummy human stuff that is probably too rich for a dog's tummy but we let him have maybe once a year. I agree with the "Duh" comment. The problem with Duh people is that no amount of explainin' is going to make them get it. At least with kids there is still hope. |
Thats either a very brave or very stupid thing to do. (I'd go with stupid )
She is lucky that Harry didn't react to her stupidity by biting her. Harry should get more custard for being a good boy!! By the way what is frozen custard?? |

I should have addressed this for our friends across the ocean. Frozen Custard is a very rich type of "ice cream" although it is not actually ice cream but custard. So it is a thicker consistency. Clear as mud huh? |
MMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Next time we have an event....WE MUST include Drews on our agenda!!!!!!! BTW.............knowing Harry, I am sure he was a little miffed at being taken away from his treasure....poor boy!!!! He is just sooo adorable and too irresistable!!!!!! |
Yeah, we used to take Maudie to the DQ. Always caused fun times, but fortunately nobody tried to lift her head out of the dish. |

Actually Ted Drewes! It is as famous as "the Hill" for out of towner's to visit. So the next time that anyone is in town we will have to take you there. Val and I will make the "sacrifice". |
I'll have one Dutchman Delight Concrete please |

Actually I had a Dutchman's sundae on Saturday afternoon and then a Marshmallow sundae on Saturday night. I haven't been in months and ended up there twice in one day. |
Judi - People don't think. Over the weekend, I was waiting in the car with Winston and Paislee while Stephen ran into the store. It was warm, the windows were down and we were parked pretty far out - - Stephen was going to be awhile so I brought a book and was not really paying attention. I heard a noise and looked up and a lady had her arm inside the car petting Winston!! Fortunately, Winston and Paislee were both cool with it and let her pet them - but JEEZ!!! I told her she should really be careful about petting strange dogs - she looked at me like I was crazy. Whatever!!! People don't think - Please tell Harry I am very proud of him for being so tolerant of the lady's ignorance. |

That is interesting Stephanie because even with us in the car Mopsy did NOT like people reaching into a car at her. She felt cornered. So if someone wanted to pet her while she was in the car I would always get her out of the car first. She was very cool with that. |
I was a little suprised too - Winston is pretty calm about things unless he thinks someone is hurting me - so I wasn't worried about him - - but I was worried about Paislee. She is still a little unpredictable. I am glad it turned out the way it did - but it made me realize I need to pay attention more....I just wish people would use a little common sense. |
The only time Pearl showed any type of aggression was when we were parking to go to a TOUCH function, of all things.
I was pulling up to the parking lot, rolled down my window to get the ticket when the parking attendent began to put his hand through the back to pet Pearl....I have never heard THAT type of bark from her ever before ...or since. I turned to him and made some kind of nasty comment. We parked, I put her TOUCH harness on her, walked over to the guy and said... "NOW, would you like to pet Pearl?" He did, she sat and enjoyed it.... Later I was told that a dog views the car as part of their kennel or den, so it makes sense as to why she became Crazy Dog!!!! |

I thought that with Mopsy too. Or like I said, someone is reaching in at her but she has nowhere to go so she felt trapped. |
I hope no one ever tries to steal my car with Paislee and Winston in it. It sounds like my two would hand the keys over and show the thief how to work the navigation. |

((and then take him to that boat so they could go for a sailing day.... ) |
People just don't think period. About anything or anyone other then themselves. They want to pet the doggie. Period. They don't think the dog might be unfriendly or scared or territorial. But God forbid the dog reacted badly. Then it would be your fault. |

Isn't that the truth? |
I think because sheepies are so cute and cuddly looking that a lot of people lose whatever common sense they might have had about other dogs.
Is frozen custard mostly a MO thing? I don't think I've seen it elsewhere... |
barney1 wrote: I think because sheepies are so cute and cuddly looking that a lot of people lose whatever common sense they might have had about other dogs. I never thought about that Stephanie but you could be right. I will never know though since I have only owned sheepdogs. barney1 wrote: Is frozen custard mostly a MO thing? I think there are some in Illinois just across the river from St. Louis. There are a lot of frozen custard places in St. Louis but none (in my opinion) comes close to Ted Drewes. There is also a frozen custard stand in mid-Missouri near my son's university. Anybody from other parts of the country know anything about frozen custard? |

Is frozen custard mostly a MO thing? I don't think I've seen it elsewhere... No, we have them in Michigan and I've had it in NYC and Chicago, too. Nowhere near as common as ice cream. though. I love frozen custard but I'll still take Pinkberry over anything any day! Judi, even worse than the people by themselves is when they let their dogs get involved in their dumb decisions. We were at a street/art fair all weekend and I brought all three dogs. It was amazing to me how many people were letting their little dogs get right up in the face of my guys. We were sitting on the curb on a nearly empty side street and people were wandering over just to see the dogs and letting their dogs walk up and sniff. It was a double whammy of dumbness: people approaching the dogs while they were eating and then letting their dogs get involved in it, too. Good thing my dogs are pretty easygoing. I have to say, there were a lot of people and the majority were pretty respectful and made sure to ask before touching. It only takes one, though... |

I've still never had Pinkberry. I think I'd like it, though.
I think I'd like frozen custard too! |

Culvers restaurants also have frozen custard. Yummy stuff. |
I love how this turned into a custard thread. |

Harry would prefer if it resulted in another trip to the custard stand. |

Jill: Do you remember that Frozen Custard place on 23 Mile Rd? I think it was near the Put Put Golf Course, across from the Chesterfield Movie Theatre. I wonder if it is still there? |
Frozen custard is a cold dessert similar to ice cream, made with eggs in addition to cream and sugar. It typically contains 10% butterfat and 1.4% egg yolk.
Just thought I would give a little insight. I read in an article about ted drewes one time that they sweeten their custard with honey. I sure wish we had it here out in california. I also can't believe that woman pulled Harry's head up while he was eating, what an a** hat!!!!! |
well its amazing what people will do - even pet owners without thinking about the consequences. |

One of my friends owned a very poorly socialised boxer. She was on her way home and was pulled over by the police. They wanted to check her blood alcohol and licence but every time they tried to reach in the window her dog went completely nuts and growled and barked at them. They just let her go in the end. As well as being dumb it is also just rude to grab a dog's head and drag it out of their food dish. How would she like it if you snatched her plate from under her nose while she's eating. I have carefully taken Tiggy's bowl away when she's eating in the hopes that it will help stop resource guarding but I dont drag on her neck. Its just not nice. |

If that woman had tried to do that to Loki she would have been drawing back a nub.......................Loki wouldn't have minded (he probably would have licked her) but I'd have moved her hand away but quick. Nobody touches my dog until I'm sure the person is ok, but I'm notoriously paranoid about things like this. Probably a good thing it didn't happen to me |

Not sure exactly what that is but it made me crack up |
A** hat is an alternative term for butt head |
