terrible reaction to Revolution

I just wanted to let everyone know what happened to my sweet Lucky. I applied the topical flea treatment, Revolution, to both him and my Bichon, Teddy. I didn't think anything of it because they had their first dose of it last month. Well about 12-15 hours later Lucky had a severe reaction. He fell down, his head was going around, his eyes were circling and he threw up. It was so horrible. I didn't think of this, but Lucky always bites, well not so much bites, but puts his mouth on Teddys back and by his neck. I think he must have done this after Tedyy had his treatment. I did a lot of research and found that if ingested, seizures, vomiting even death can occur. I also read that if you have small children they should not pet the dog for 24 hours after treatment. This stuff is extremely toxic!!!! I am not going to ever use it again and will be looking for homepathic ways to prevent fleas & ticks. I guess I will use the pills for the heartworm. I thank God Lucky is ok now, but am still so shaken up and sad

Oh my! :(

I hope Lucky continues to recover. That is just horrible to have happen.
I hav a friend who uses Revolution on all her dogs, no issues. I guess you are wise to not use it, at least until Lucky outgrows the habit of sucking on Teddy!
What an awful experience! Hope he feels better soon,...
Topicals and even medications can be scary stuff. :(

My Schipperke-mix's liver enzymes went through the roof after applying a topical flea product... ALT over 1,200. No way to prove it was the flea treatment but we don't use them here anymore. We seldom had flea problems but we ripped out the last of the carpet in the house anyway. We had used Fleabusters on the carpet earlier in the year but Bumble developed contact dermatitis... this was the main reason we removed the carpet.

And I've got 3 dogs in my pack that have had reactions to the often prescribed medication Metronidazole. One's ALT recently spiked over 800 while on it and dropped 600 points in less than a week after discontinuing it. Two others had allergic reactions with facial swelling. What's safe for one dog isn't always safe for another.

Ask your vet about safer flea treatment options. You might want to take a look at this article too- http://healing.about.com/od/petcare/a/p ... ontrol.htm I recommend discussing even holistic methods with your vet before using them.
I'm sorry that happened to your dog. Glad your doggie doing better now. :( My maltese had a reaction to a topical as well, and I hear it's more common in small dogs w/sensitive skin. We just stopped using topicals from that point on. I know how scary it was to see my dog go through what she did!!!!

this happen to my duffy he ended up with a big infected hole on his neck!!!
Thank you so much every one. He is doing great now, and so is mom :)
wow that is scary. glad all is better now.
that is so scarey. i dont use anything for fleas apart from brushing and baths, I comb the yorkie with a flea comb. We are quite lucky we dont seem to get them much. I hate anything chemical i wont let OH use anything in the garden in case the animals get it. He wanted to put slug pellets down but he bought a slug trap you put beer in....lots of drunk slugs, but no dead ones.. :o
I've had good results with the topical Frontline. I currently have 3 dogs. I apply it every other month, May-Nov. I always apply it before they go to bed at night. They all sleep in the same room but each has their own kennel. That way the product can dry overnight on them. Usually the next morning they are more concerned about eating than playing & go a few more hours before they would be in contact with the product. I do always tell family members when I apply it to the dogs so we don't pet them in the area where it is applied.
Very scarey, you could try essential oils, Lavender or Pennyroil is suppose to help, by treating areas like bedding & surrounds to keep fleas at bay, also Garlic in their diet during flea season is also good, even though there has been some discussions on that, onions dangerous but garlic I think in the appropriate amounts is OK on their food to ward off those critters. Been using garlic for years and no adverse reactions .

If not and fleas are bad, just try bathing in a Flea deterrant shampoo or powder if finding flea dirt on the dog rather then using the type of spot on products.
