I guess I am going to make my big boy a hair appointment with my old groomer for the next day or so... I have been brushing him at least twice a day but it seems to be little to no help. He developed a bad habit of nibbling his hind quarters when he was getting fleas from the new neighbors dogs, mind you we spray our yard and he is on a strict Frontline routine...but that does not stop those pesky critters from jumping off of their dogs and on to him and biting him. Anyway he has to get allergy shots, along with antibiotics so his skin doesn't develop a full blown skin infection. My question is this: I've noticed his fur on the back looks a little different and feels a bit coarser now...is this from the nibbling or could it be a transition to his adult coat or even the upcoming winter coat?? He just turned 1 year old on July 12, 2009. Molly was 3 when we got her so I have nothing to compare it to since she was no longer a puppy and past the initial transition stage. Any flea remedy suggestions would be helpful as well. I really don't like to spray a bunch of chemicals on my yard, but until they decide to do something with their dogs I kind of have no choice since Kody is so allergic to the flea (saliva) bites. They don't even put flea collars on their dogs, of course they keep them in their garage at night and in the back yard all day with absolutely no attention except for my daily visit with my doggy bone gifts!! So frickin sad for them... the dog warden tells me there is nothing they can do since they keep food and water for them and provide them shelter at night or during bad weather. Thanks in advance |

Could be adult coat coming in but that shouldn't make him itch. |
Time for a good grooming and bath. While it could be the adult coarse coming in.......lucky you and the coarse coat........some thinning is suspicious. Keep an eye on it. If it gets worse have a complete thyroid panel done. There are other problems it might be.........but he'd need to show some serious conditions first......and very unlikely in a young pup.
Sounds like he's an allergy boy so you'll have to watch him carefully, keep him clean and make sure his food isnt part of his "itch" problem. |

I haven't used it yet but I hear many people having good results with Neem Oil for keeping fleas away. Personally I use Advantrix ( as opposed to Advantage). Advantrix takes care of fleas and mosquitoes. Advantage inly fleas.
There are also some flea bombs you can use in the house that are of "natural" ingredients. Of your dogs has fleas from the neighbors, your house definately has some too.
Hope he feels better soon. |
