New Puppy, What to Expect?

Been a while since I have had a puppy. We plan on crate training, how many times will puppy need to be let out during the night? Do most people keep puppy in room with them? I have read that they can only hold their bladders 1-2 hours does that mean your getting up every 1-2 hours? Puppy will 8 weeks old when we get him.

Thanks
Greg

There's some sort of equation to how long they're supposed to be able to hold it that I'm sure someone will post, but my dogs past and present have all been different. I had one where I had to set the alarm clock b/c she'd go every 2 hours and never had any UTI problems or anything. She eventually advanced to 4 hrs but could not hold it longer than that (or wouldn't) until she was 1. That was my first OES btw. Now she can hold it for 12 hrs.

My second seemed to be like all the other dogs I've had in my life. Could "pretty much" hold it through the night with one early morning potty break from the beginning. Even when I let them out more, they didn't go. BUT... during the day they could never hold it more than 2-4 hrs.

Congrats on the new pup and I hope we get to hear all about it with pics!
Hi. We just got our puppy, Sully, a few weeks ago. He'll be 11 weeks tomorrow and was 8wks when we brought him home. We bring the crate up into our room at night, and in the daytime it is in the kitchen/dining area. For the first two weeks I was getting up at night whenever I heard him moving around, which ended up being every two or three hours. Then, one night, I was so tired I thought I'd see what happened if I just didn't take him out. He was absolutely fine until almost 6:00AM! So now, most nights, his last outing is at about 10:30, and then he's not up until morning. There have been a couple of nights when he really let me know that he had to go, not just moving around, but whining. Then, of course, I took him right out and he had really needed to go. My vet just told me that the equation is their age in months plus 2 for how many hours they can be crated during the day. But, I have also read in a great puppy book by Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson that it is their age in months plus one. I think it probably depends a lot on the puppy. The longest I've left Sully crated in the day so far is only two hours. And he definitely doesn't hold it during the day outside of the crate for very long at all. We take him out all the time, and still once or twice every couple of days he has an accident. There's my two cents. Good luck, and congratulations!
Thanks for the information really appreciated the input.
Some believe in holding water a few hours before bed time.
Just a little update At 12 weeks Harry is making it through the night 10pm-6am. I try not to give him water after 8pm seems to be working.

Hipppee, now just need to get him potty trained as he is still not reliable even taking him out every 1/2 hour and or taking him to pee before coming inside.

O'well can't complain least I am getting more sleep these days now just need to fix my 4 and 2 year old boys as they keep getting up in middle of night ;)
It's great that Harry can make it through the night without needing to go out. :clappurple: Quincy was the same way at that age. He NEVER had an accident overnight, and he was not crated. Oscar was a completely different story....out every three hours every night for weeks......like having a newborn. :)

During the day, everything seemed to click for both dogs at about five months of age. Both became VERY reliable then, and became what I could really call "housebroken". Quincy never peed in the house again, and Oscar only had one accident when he was on prednisone.

Glad things are going well.
