I have a friend who will be staying at our house to care for the dogs and cats. The cats I'm sure will be just fine, they are very laid back. Wendel I'm sure will be okay, too. We have had him a total of 3 months now and he acclimated within the day to our home. Asterisk I am a bit concerned with. She has always been with one of us. When Josh went away for work, she had me. When I went back to Michigan to visit family, she was with Josh. She is very dependent on me. So this will be a new experience. We will only be gone 3 days. Any tips on what I could do to help comfort her? Anything I should leave? Maybe I'm just being over-worried, there is always that, too. |

I actually think these sort of separations are worse for us than the dogs
Asterisk and Wendel will have each other, and their own familiar home to comfort them...the important thing (I feel) is to NOT make a big deal out of leaving...be very casual, and the same on your return. Also, have the sitter keep them on their normal schedule/routines as much as possible. Im getting ready to go on a trip that will take me away for about the same amount of time, (we'll have a house-sitter too) and I know the pups will be fine...its Mama who'll be blubbering in her hotel room from missing them! |

Absolutely! Even older dogs that have lived with the same people forever can easily adapt to their family being away. Some of the clingiest dogs I know take about 15 minutes to mope before they are totally immersed in what's happening around them. They don't look back like people do. Being in familiar surroundings will be a huge bonus for the dogs and you'll be more comfortable knowing your home is a safe place for them. I feel your pain. We always take Nelson with us when we go on vacation although we do leave Sassy with my sister. Neurotic dog mom here! |
i know for me, it is worse for me. I miss them! They do fine. |
