I was wondering why people fed the food they do to their dogs and why? |
|
My girls were raised on Eukanuba till ten weeks, then switched to Iams puppy, not large breed, then I tried Wellness Super 5 Puppy Mix, and now they are on Pro Plan Puppy Chicken and Rice.
There have been a few topics started like this one, if you do a search you can get more details as a lot of our answers have changed over time trying to find what works. I'm still not thrilled, as I cannot seem to get Dancer to put on weight no matter what I do. |
Currently on Nutro Large Breed Puppy, and are transitioning
to Nutro LB Adult. He is doing very well on this brand- he was on Iams from the breeder. The Iams food did not agree with him. We switched to Pronature, but then could not find a supplier. We liked the ingredients in Nutro, and it is available at Petco and other pet stores. Best wishes and congratulations on your new puppy !!! |

Thanks! |
I clicked on Wellness - because that's what I feed my cats and what I'll probably end up feeding my pupper. My breeder recomended Purina or Diamond foods though.
Even though I know it's totally up to him what he likes. How can you tell they like the food anyway? Will he scarf it all the time? Should I buy mini-bags first? |
I'm doing the transition from what the breeder had Spike on (Purina Complete Nutrition - YUCK! Byproducts and grossness!!) to Canidae and it's going very well. In fact he had diarrhea from that disgusting Purina and he seems to be doing much better with the Canidae. It's Canidae All Life Stages, by the way. They do not differentiate between puppies and adults because it's a very high quality product. I was actually able to find it here locally for only $26 for a 40 lb bag and $16 for a 20 lb bag. I'm happy with it so far.
Oh, I should mention that my cat is on Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance (kibble) and is doing fabulously on it. I was thinking about doing the raw dog food but for now I'm happy with the dry kibble stuff from Canidae. I might switch in the future to the raw formula from NB if I win the lottery since it seems to be awfully expensive (especially for a large dog). http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/ |
I've used Iam's Eukanuba for years because it was the only food that didn't cause rescues coming in and out of our house to get the runs! It seemed to be the one food that we could depend on to change them over to immediately without any adverse results. When you have this many OES coming and going
the fewer bum washes you have to do, the better for all involved! |
LOL Cathy...that's a lot of sheepies! I'm jealous
We use Iams large breed puppy food. Jasper loves it and we haven't had any problems with him on it. |
Benny came from the breeders eating purina puppy chow. She suggested that we switch to large breed puppy food. He has been quite happy with Purina One large breed puppy food. But, he will be 1yr old in a month so, we will slowly be changing to Purina One lamb and rice formula. My parents have an airedale that has had many skin irritations and allergies. He seems to do well best with lamb and rice formulas. So, I figured why risk problems... I will just start Benny off right! |
We had been using Flint River but am now trying my hand at BARF. We have a lot to learn but Erised and Bella love to see me going into the kitchen. Bella likes beef and chicken but Erised wont touch the chicken. go figure.
I finally found a use for the meat grinder that belonged to my mother that ive been toting around the last few years lol. |
We use California Natural for dry food and Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul for wet food. Both were among a number of brands the doctor recommended. The dogs seem to be doing well on them.
Jennifer, Baxter, Cassiopia & Sharkey |
I use Pro Plan Puppy food the chicken & rice formula. Beau likes it and it doesn't upset his tummy. I tried to feed him Science Diet for a short time, but he didn't care for it. So I switched back to Pro Plan and he's done fine with it. I have a friend, who is a breeder of Mastiffs, that recommended Bil-Jac , but I haven't tried it yet. I guess I figured the less I change his diet, the better off he'll be. Any truth to that? |
It's not really changing his diet that is a problem. Some people find the dog becomes picky if the diet is changed too often, and if it is changed too quickly it can lead to diarreah.
It is best to stick with whatever works, however I am thinking of putting the girls on Eukanuba again. *shrug* who knows.... for now they can stay on the pro plan puppy, but for adult food I think I will go with Eukanuba. |
Oh my goodness Cathy I love your pic of all your OES!!Man thats a great picture.Id love to be right in the middle of those sheepies!!They ALL look so happy and healthy, what a great job your doing. Now for me I fed my boys Nutro lamd and rice for large breeds, and they are doing just great.i have posted before in other threads that i have always fed my dogs Nutro lamb and rice.I learned along time ago that a good diet is very important. When I had my very 1st collie I learned alot about allergies and how to avoid them by just feeding a good food to them,I also was very young when I got my 1st collie so I didnt know anything hardly,he taught me alot thats for sure. |
Willowsprite - how is your transition to twice daily feeding coming along? Are the girls adjusting to it okay?
Cathy - I love that picture too! That must be what heaven looks like! |
Cathy, where did you get that picture??? Is that a pic of heaven or what?
I voted Purina. Lennon was on Eukanuba, then he got sick and would not touch it... yuck! We switched to Nutro, it was OK. Then we moved to Hill's Science Diet, but we hated the results. A friend reccomended Pro Plan or One, and since then their stools are firm and they devour the stuff. For us, it'a a keeper! |
That picture was taken in my back yard when I lived in CA. Those are just a few of the OES rescues that lived with us over the years. We had get togethers twice a year so we could keep in touch with all our former "roomies" : ) That was our 4th of July birthday party or as we liked to call it "our Nekked Sheepie party"! It got up to 108 degrees in the summer, so "nekked" was the only way to go! Heaven? You bet! That is the ONLY thing I miss about no longer living on the west coast (no offense to you West Coasters, but I'm a born and raised New Englander and simply had to come home!)is our parties and the close proximity to the rescues. California is beautiful, but it's just not for me! : ( We had one around Christmas, too, and every came in their full coats. I'll have to hunt around for those pics!
Cathy P.S. There were several more OES inside the house! LOL! |
I'm so happy to have a dog that will eat dry food! It's so much cleaner-- both for the carpet and the dog. Clyde's on ProPlan large breed puppy. He loves it but I worry that he's gaining weight too quickly. We're approaching 6 months and 60 pounds. Won't be long until he's pushing me around |
He does sound like a big boy, but if his weight is proportionate to the size of his body, height and bone structure he is probably doing fine. |
ButtersStotch - I have been told by a few breeders that OES pups are funny. They will go through odd proportion stages (sort of like teen agers). So as long as Clyde is bright, alert and responsive - he should be fine.
Our Farley is also 6 months now and also around 60 pounds. Just last weekend for the first time I realized that he has become a very strong dog. No more puppy fat on him! I don't know why - but it hit me all of a sudden as I was pushing him off the bed. (He likes to jump up and say good morning ... slurp! ) I better accellerate his training schedule! |
Has anyone used Life's Abundance dog food
by Dr. Jane Bicks ? It's sold on her web site or by distributors. Thanks ! |
Remy was on a local manufacturers food, Acana, no by products, good quality humangrade ingredients, but she just doesn't like the taste. So when I came near to the end of this last bag, I decided to switch to something new, the pet store guy gave me a reccommendation of Precise dog food. But I chose Nutro, since it is more available and my cats eat Nutro. He said Nutro and Acana were pretty much equals.
So I took some Precise samples home too. I did my own in home taste test. 3 soup bowls, 1 with Nutro 1 with Acana, 1 with Precise. She went straight to Nutro, ate the bowl clean. I even took it and switched them around half way through, and she took Nutro again. Once the bowl was clean she moved on to Precise, I then added more Nutro to the empty bowl, she left Precise and came back to nutro. Never even glanced at the Acana. When I fed her Acana I did have to juice up the taste for her, otherwise she just wouldn't eat it...or when she was finally starving at 10 pm she'd eat. We are now a Nutro family. |
My three dogs are on raw/natural kibble. The kibble we use is Bench & Field Holistic Natural Canine Formula. Has great ingredients and is working well. Whole Dog Journal (www.whole-dog-journal.com) even approves of it (and mind you they're pretty picky when it comes to dog food). |
I feed a variety of foods. For about 3-4 months I feed Wellness with canned foods in the morning and always a raw organic meal in the evening. I then switch over slowly to another high qualtiy dog food such as Solid Gold, Innovia, California Naturals and Eagle Pack. I always add the same brand canned food with their morning kibble meal or Sardines or wild pacific salmon. In the raw evening meal they get a variety of different meat (all free range or meadow fed) whole eggs shells and all-blended with organic yogurt, hemp oil, ground organic flax seeds, mixture of veggies including sweet potatoes, some times wild rice. Nutritional Yeast is always added to the raw meal. And so on and so on
My dogs do wonderful on their diet and have very strong immune systems, which I help to support periodically with Astragulas. I also add Yucca root for infammatory problems for my old girl. Variety is the spice of life and I myself feel its very important to change your dogs diet around every few months or at least twice a year. Some times with a high quality food you may be getting too much of one thing, just the same with a lower quality food you may not be getting enough of one thing but it may never show up in the appearance of your dog. I like to even things out by switching around to ensure they are getting a well rounded diet. |
Home Made best choice around mints chicken oat meal and a package of peas and carrots |
I use Orijen Six Fresh Fish. Made in Canada and never recalled. Their information provided in what they call their "white pages" on their website explains how the food is processed. Both my dogs had problems on other foods and this one has worked for the last 7 years. I feed them twice a day and it works out great. |

When you have this many OES coming and going the fewer bum washes you have to do, the better for all involved! It's a herd of Sheepdogs!! It's been a long time, Integra! I hope all it well with you. After scouring the ends of the earth with dog food due to Foz's constant runs, we have now lucked out with giving him a little bit of Great Life Dr E's Limited Ingredient Buffalo dry kibble and 1 raw patty each meal of Stella and Chewy's Duck Duck Goose. HIs breath smells, but his poop is great! |
James Wellbeloved turkey and rice kibble is the only food my last 2 sheepys could have with no upset tums so Sprocket was changed to the same from Pro Plan a few weeks after we got him home from the breeder-she recomended it as an alternative.x |
