Good score, on your BVA Cert do they also have the overall breed average for the UK on it?
Just interested here we get there combined score and also what the overall breed average is on the AVA cert. Great hips Willow. |
Yes they do Breed Mean Score being 19.

Thanks for that here it is 17, so nice to know what the UK breed average is now, last time years ago it was 23 in the UK so good to hear what it is currently.
Best wishes with willow for her up and coming motherhood. |
What do those numbers mean, Lisa? |
To try and explain it easy, hips are x-rayed then they go off to be read, here it goes to a central place/register where 5 readers grade the X-rays and score each side of the hips the overall average is listed from all those readers. It is seperately added up for each side then the two amounts are combined for a total overall score.
Like in willow she got 5/4 so five on one side and 4 on the other for a combined score of 9. On the certs like the BVA in the UK we get also what the total overall average is for the breed mentioned from the hip registers on the certs as well, so currently in the UK the average there is 19 combined and 17 here. That is collected from the registers on the data from the breed, the good, the bad and the ugly are included for the breed as an entirety to give a general overall average score for the breed. So breeders can gauge from the current average with their own combined score how good the hips are on their dogs for breeding on with. As you can see from willows hip score she is well under the current breeds overall average so great hips for her. Now do you want to talk about the European scoring system that is different again with the gradings Brian just got his done A/A so I suppose excellant under your ofa system. |
What is the possible score for each side? Like 20/20? If the average is a combined 19, I would think the potential score would be high. |
Extremely high if 20 on one side and 20 on the other giving a total of combined 40. With the combined breed average being 19UK, here 17 you can see more then double with that combined reading of 40. And a score really not to breed with.
Here is Bries the certs are in great detail so this is how they come to it. Hip Joints right and left Norberg Angle 1- 1 Sulaxtion 1- 2 Cranial acetabular edge 1- 1 Dorsal acetabular edge 0- 0 Cranial effective acetabular rim 0- 0 Acetabular fossa 0- 0 Caudal acetabular edge 0- 0 Femoral Head/neck exostosis 1- 1 Femoral head recontouring 0- 0 Total Right hip 4, left hip 5 combined score for Brie is 9 !! Overall breed average combined score 17 Now brie is well under the overall breed average score, the certs are in great detail for information, say brie was more then double on her score from the right side and the left side of the hips say a 6 or more on one side and a 3 on the other for a combined score of 9+ still well under the breed average but it would also tell you from the information if doing a mating you would put her to a dog with a more evan score on both sides. So the certs are in great detail with not only the score but other info to ponder on when the results come through after grading. I think the OFA you just get a grade of Excellant/good/fair on it but does it come with all the other info as well.? |
Thanks, Lisa. That makes more sense. (Scoring-wise, at least. I need a anatomy chart for the rest, lol.)

Hmm, I've never seen a full report but I've never had a need to yet. I guess I'll report back in 9 months! |
