9-1/2 weeks is way to young to expect no accidents. With a boy you need to be quite consistent & they will end up being very good about not going in the house. At 9-1/2 weeks his bladder is quite small yet so don't expect him to be housebroken right off the bat. It is possible that he has a UTI or bladder infection but you'd need to take him to the vet to find out for sure on that score. |
9 1/2 weeks old I would expect the odd pee pee accident as they cant hold especially when excited.
However as it is getting worse probably pay to get a pee sample before you go to the vets just to check no UTI or Bladder problem to rule that out. That is a sterile Jar and collecting his pee before you visit the vet, saves a bit of time once you get there as the vet will ask for a pee sample and sometimes harder to get them to go when you want them too at a vet. If all that checks out OK then you will need to go right back to the start with basic potty training. He has only been with you 2 weeks so if no UTI or bladder problem re-start from right back to basics. That is a routine and sticking to it till it clicks pottying in the house is a no no Also areas he has been in the home, make sure absolutely nothing remains that is by using a pee clean up product that removes any trace of where he has been, otherwise you will have more accidents in the house as he will be tempted to go to those areas again as he has made his mark there. Accidents in the house, no fuss, take him on a lead outside and when he goes, praise and reward him. No play off lead outside till he has peed. You can also train them to go to a specific place in the yard to toilet by using the lead and taking them to that specific spot to potty. Before the fun outside running around happens. Straight after a sleep when he wakes, straight outside to potty on the lead. Evenutally no lead needed as they mature a bit more and controll is better and it clicks this is my potty place "Outside". Same with after a drink or meal wait 10 minutes then outside on the lead to go. Best wishes fun time with the potty training, they go good and then regress occassionally so no fuss when a mishap happens in the house and heaps of praise when they potty outside he will soon click fast. Firstly just get him checked by the vet with a pee sample to rule out any problems there Then if not, start again with the potty training. Best wishes, glad I am past that stage |
I got Asterisk at 8 weeks old. She had accidents occassionally until she was 4 months old. She didn't have an accident daily, but she would have one every couple days. As time went on, they became more and more infrequent.
Part of my problem was that Asterisk was my first puppy. I had no concept of how small her bladder was and how frequently she needed to go out. I began to watch the clock and every two hours, out we went. It took till 5-6 months old before we could sleep an entire night without needing to go out. |
Our secret to sucees was potty breaks every hour on the hour. Of course I took 14 days vacation when we brough home our pup at 8 weeks old and then I was lucky enough to have someone home with him.
I think they say they can hold it one hour for each month old? So at 9 weeks, that is only about an hour? Seems in the beginning they pee all the time all day long, doesn't it |
My Puppy is 9 weeks today, we have had him for a week. He we was diagnosed with UTI and is on his third day of antibiotics. We have been really good about taking him out every 1/2 hour and or he is had been outside we have witness him PEE. We bring him in and bam he empties his bladder. Frustrating I know he has UTI but come on. We clean up use natures own on tile floor to get rid of any remains. We can leave him inside for any time at this point. Hope the antibiotics kick in soon. |
One thing that really helped me was taking the puppy out every time I noticed a transition: if he suddenly stopped playing, if he suddenly started sniffing around or turning in circles, if he'd been playing with Maggie for 10-15 minutes, if we were going from downstairs to upstairs, if someone came in the house, if someone left the house. Anytime things changed, I took him out to pee. Somewhere between 4 and 5 months, he became completely reliable but I still give him plenty of opportunities to pee outside and I still go out with him and give him treats for success. |
Thanks for all of the replies. Sully is now 12 weeks and doing great with the housebreaking. He didn't turn out to have a UTI, but for a couple of weeks things just went crazy and he seemed to pee all the time. We just continued as we were going, and now he really seems to be getting it. No accidents for over a week, knock on wood. I would never leave him unattended, of course, but he has a lot more freedom when he has recently been out, as long as he's not alone. Now we're dealing with all of the nipping, mouthing, leash grabbing.....but boy, is he cute. We've had a couple of incidents with growling when we approached him chewing a bone, but we're working on that and so far, it hasn't happened again. That really was the only thing that has concerned me. Any experience with this? |
