Food protective?

Here lately, Puddy has become "food protective?". I say that because he will allow me to take any food or treats away, but when my male Aussie tries to get to the food bowl he growls. He will allow my female to the bowl, even leave when she comes toward it. I free feed, so it is not as if he thinks he is not going to get enough to eat. When he finished eating, he lays down in front of the bowl to protect it. I have been feeding my other dog in a separate room so that he can actually get food without a confrontation. Puddy has figured that one out now and when he hears me scooping food to put in the bowl he goes crazy. Other than continuing the separate feeding does anyone have any ideas? I have always free fed because it is so much easier.

When you feed your Aussie stay around, make Puddy sit, lay or go to another room and stay calm. Even if you free feed when Puddy misbehaves remind him this is not OK with you. Remember the lost boys in Peter Pan, no direction no manners.

I know it isn't that easy to accomplish but stay on them.
We free feed too. Lennon gets in his protective phase from time to time. What we do is start feeding him by hand for a while and place the bowl on an open space so he does not feel he has the right to protect his food. Feed the alpha first, then the rest of your doggies.

If the growling is getting too troublesome, I would reccomend you stopped free feeding for a while and hand feed the first bites. Also, keep the food bag in a closet away from the dogs, that way you will be the provider and it will be easier to set the rules to re-establish the pack order and ease on the growling. It's worked for us in the past.
My girls are free fed too, and as Sky got bigger there was some struggling for alpha between the two. Not out and out fighting, but Dancer will push Sky out of the way if she is eating, Dancer is alpha so she eats first. It comes naturally to them. Around other dogs, Dancer is not alpha at all, she behaves submissively to every other dog she has met. I feel since it is a natural instinctive thing I let them sort it out on their own. To a point. Shoving the other out of the way until it is their turn to eat is pretty mild in my opinion. The one time Dancer gave a little growl at Sky I took the food bowl away, told her no, and made them both wait. I probably didn't have to do that, but better safe than sorry.
