I thought about drainage pipe, the PVC with holes, but can't figure out how to keep it on her tail and do I really want a plastic weapon at her rear to go along with the cone head up front? Vet said, I dunno, but it's time it should be uncovered. |

Is it possible to restrict the motion of the tail so that it can't be brought out far enough to get around the cone? Could the tail be gently tied with a gauze strip and the other end of the strip attached to the back of the cone, or some similar arrangement? You know, not tight, just enough to prevent the end from getting on front of the cone. Or maybe to a belt, or to a rear haunch or leg.... |
I think you may be on to something there - what about a short length of the flexible drainage pipe - you can cut the holes larger and use vet wrap on the ends to secure it - you probably wouldn't need much..... |
When I worked at a vet many, many years ago, our vet had the same problem with a great dane. The dane was adopted by one of our clients from a rescue with his tail partially amputated. Dr had no other option but to complete the amputation.
The problem was, that huge dane was constantly ripping open his wound because the ecollar wasn't much of a barrier. The solution our vet came up with was to take another e-collar, cut it down so it wasn't really, really big, but just big enough to be duct taped to the one on the dog. It made it pretty large, but it seemed to do the trick. |
Okay, how about the E collar the opposite way, sort of around the waist so that the open part of the e collar is at the tail and the part that would usually be around the neck is around the waist? Do I make sense? Sort of like a skirt around the aist but the open end of the e collar she he can't bite the tail????
There is also a comfy cone if this idea seems like it would work but due to the plastic nature of the e collar, the comfy cone is soft and supple... |
From a petsite - I'm not sure about this one:
For large dogs, consider cutting a hole in the bottom of a plastic bucket just big enough to slip your dog's head through. Try to sand down the newly cut edges to soften the plastic or use a flame to melt the plastic and reduce sharp edges. Buster neck brace? https://familypet-vet.vetsfirstchoice.c ... fcij5yvabc))/Results.aspx?c=3&z= I used to have a big foam neck brace bookmarked, but I can't find it now. |
Thats really hard if the e-collar is not working and she can get to it, amazing she able too especially all the right moves and being sooooo flexible for a 12 year old. It must be itchy, annoying and driving her nuts,
Uncovered now makes it hard if you cant re-wrap & pad it it to stop her. For once have absolutely no ideas there with her situation All I can think of is more depth to the cone to stop her and just take it off when she needs to drink and eat & pop it back on again. Poor baby hope it heals up soon. |
hmmm, some good ideas though I haven't quite figured out tieing her tail to the e-collar. Sounds like I'd be rigging a ship.
Buster Collar/bottomless bucket is a possibility......would be great if it worked and we could do away with the e-collar too. Stop her scraping the walls in frustration. Extending the e-collar would be easy as we have several of the smaller size ones on hand. More duct tape and a more dangerous dog......sorry shins and walls. I've thought about a styrofoam cup over the tail.....may try that tomorrow...to protect the slit from dirt. This thing couldn't have broken up where the tail doesn't get pooped on or dragged thru the mud. Imagine a deflated balloon hanging out from the underside of her tail...and the balloon's side is slit open. The dermatitis butt seems to be going away. We didn't put the ointment on her tonight, mainly because she was muddy back there. Washed what we could and called it done. |
