looks like oak. I got the idea on HGTV to paint the cabinets and wainscotting. All walls have the half paneling. TO MUCH WOOD. I have black appl. and a stainless stove. I was thinking of painting the cabinets steel gray with a shade darker on the wainscot. ANY thoughts on this? Have yanyone ever painter their cabinets.????????????????? HELP NEEDED |

Remember to spray the paint on the cabinets and try not to use a brush, it can leave streaks.
I'm not a "grey" loving person so I won't put in my two cents. I have been watching alot of HGTV lately, have no idea why, but they seem to do alot with the different shades of grey. |
Can you live with that much gray? With black appliances it sounds kind of dark. |
If it were me, I'd experiment with the walls first. Get rid of the wood & either paint or wallpaper the walls a lighter color. Also, possibly lighten up your countertops. That may just be enough to brighten up your kitchen. Once you paint wood cupboards, if you decide the look isn't what you want, you have a heck of a job returning them to their natural state. I remember having painted cupboards in my old house & it seemed like I was always wiping hand prints & kitchen dirt off of them. It showed up overnight. When we built our house, we put in 42 kitchen cupboards, all natural wood stained a french provencial color. I also had matching paneling & a chairrail on the walls. Sounds like a lot of "dark". But I got almond colored appliances, almond colored counter tops & sink & my walls are light corordinating colors to give some character. We also installed a light colored tile floor. I grew up in a family that did carpenter work & so did my husband. I guess we were taught back then that "painted" wood generaly meant the wood underneath was a cheaper quality with not such a nice grain. Better wood was always stained to bring out the qualities of the wood. I agree with violet on the "grey". I'm not a grey loving person either. Of course everyone has their own opinions. |
I can add the floor is a white/lt grey with black accents. My counter top is almond. Solid that is. There were very old appl. that were almond but we replaced them as I said. The top part of my walls is a mustard color. |
How about getting a roll of butcher paper (no I don't know where you get that stuff) and painting it and hanging over the cabinets. This will give you an idea of the finished effect.
I guess the mustard is throwing me...... Do you live in a two story house.....or can you add some overhead natural light.....sky light, solar tube, etc to bring in more natural light. sometimes getting more light into a dark cabinet kitchen will help. I envy you having the wood cabinets to be able to paint! |
How about going with a color very close the the counter
color? That way you have more flow of color. You already have black in you appliances. Another strong color may make the room too heavy. I love the butcher paper idea. Paint it and tape it up for a few days. You'll know in no time it you like it, and you've not lost anything - also nothing to re-do. Shellie |
Thank you for all great ideas. I also saw a linen color cabinet with a wash over it and then I would not touch the wainscott. Just pait the walls linen.
How does that sound? |
I would paint the lowers in Black, a matte black that can have that slight destressed look. The uppers I would paint a crisp white and if you can replace the center wood panel with frosted glass in one or two of the uppers it would look really great. Then I would paint the paneling on the walls a crisp white. and the walls above a neutral, like a soft, soft grey or taupe. If you keep the entire room in neutrals you can pop color in with your things.... red mixer, or tea kettle or canisters... towels and rug on the floor by the sink... and change them out when the mood or season strikes you... it will look really rich
You can take the cabinet doors off, clean them really well and then give them a light sanding, filling the holes where the handles were, you may want new hardware, go with a silver look to match the one stainless steel item. As for painting with a brush vs. spay. I recommend a high quality paint and also go for a better brush, if you prep the doors well, the paint will go on with out a hitch. Paint the cabints frames too so if they show when the doors are open or closed they will match... uppers and lowers... Your counter is neutral, don't worry about it right now... I think this combo will look amazing and expensive. If you don't like black, try the espresso brown on the lowers, that will also look really nice with the almond counter, and use a light cream instead of the crisp white... it will warm up the room... I love kitchen remodels.... Lee and I did ours last year and I wish I could have done it with just painting the cabinets... I had to gut and replace... |
My SIL has white painted cupboards that are fabulous. They were sprayed and are very much a hard surface, and super easy to clean. |
grey = yuck imo for a kitchen. |
I am an HGTV addict too! Last year I had my mahogany cabinets painted and glazed and I LOVE the way they turned out. Everyone thought I was crazy to paint over the mahogany but the kitchen was dark even though there are three big windows in there.
The painter used an almond base and a dark brown glaze. We changed the hardware on the cabinets too. The look is great. When the cabinets were done I did decide that I needed to paint the walls too. With this technique you can use a brush to apply the paint because the glaze evens everything out. Good luck on your project. |

I love the idea of black bottoms and linen white on top. No I cannot put anything like glass in the top ones. they are pieces of board in rows that are fastened in the back together. too country for me! |
What I meant to say on my above post is I saw the black bottom and linen top on HGTV last week. It looked really nice.
I think it was on "Color Splash" with David. |
