Monday night, he was really sick so we went to the Emergency Room..12 hours later they transferred him to another hospital via ambulance. There we waited another day or two (as am so exhausted just found out - today is Thursday) He had his surgery today and is currently in isolation as it's been confirmed it's Meningitis (but not sure what type yet until his brain biopsy results comes back.) I'm going to sleep for a few hours as my thought process is a bit fuzzy as I've been up since Sunday. Send him your positive thoughts and I'll pass it along. Marianne |

I'm so sorry you guys have to deal with this. I can't imagine how hard it must be to be a parent at a time like this. I want you to know that Joan had Meningitis as a 15 or 16 year old and her prognosis was very poor, but she surprised everyone and has lived a wonderful symptom free life -- for the last, oh let's just say 29+++ years. I wish you both well and a speedy recovery and I want you to know we're thinking about you. |
Marianne all our prayers are with you. Please give our sincere best wishes to your son from us in the UK. Remember to look after yourself during this time.

Thoughts are with you & your son. Me too! I hope he is on the mend. . . |
Thanks again everyone for your well wishes and positive thoughts. It means a lot. I am spending 12-14 hrs a day at the hospital but overall we're both doing good. My son is coherent and I know he's going to be okay when he complained about his bald head.
Ironically, just the day before his illness we had a spat regarding his asking me for money for a haircut. He had been laid off his job and returned home to live with me 6 wks ago. He had asked me for money 2 wks before but wasn't happy with the haircut. Of course I gave the "whaddya think I'm made of money mother speech as he wanted money again to fix the first haircut. Sigh I gave him the money again for yet another haircut. That night he got sick and the following day he had his head shaved and now has a shunt and tubes protruding from his head. To make it worse - he had brain surgery on his Birthday. I said it will be a birthday he will never forget. |

I'm late finding this post, too, Marianne, but I am so happy to hear that he is on the mend. |
Thanks again everyone for the well wishes.
He asked me to take a photo of his head as no mirrors were around..urg I'd been avoiding it and tried to talk him out of it. As the lights have been off in his room for more than a week and his head is covered with a huge bandaid it was the first time I viewed it as well. Underneath was: A bright purple shaved head with stitches on one side and a tube draining brain fluid on the other. Not a pretty sight. He's not a happy camper and worse they have a laser pointed at his head which I think beeps if he moves his head a few inches off the pillow. Not sure when he'll get to go home it could be 2 wks or 2 months. In a nutshell I'm optimistic however, as if he does come home it's a good thing I haven't sold/rented the other place yet as I've been terrified to think of Merlin,Snoop or Panda jumping up on him while he's prone on the couch or the ongoing renos. I've been begging the restoration company to finish up before he comes home (regarding insurance claim - flood) at my new place. Sadly the drywallers put too much thinset on the walls and the shower won't fit back in, so the plumbers had to go home again. This means carpenter has to come back, then plumbers, then hot tub guy then tile guy. It's like dominoes - one can't finish the job unless something is done first. Having the other house means I can bring the dogs there for the day. I may also move back in there temporarily while Kaj stays at the new place. Somehow we'll make it work so my son has a quiet place to recoup. Somehow I hope everything will fall back into place, the work will be done, my son gets home, I eventually go back to work and I can sleep in something other than a chair. Despite it all, I feel lucky and only infection is a fear despite all the other woes. :Life is still good. Marianne |
I am so glad to hear he is doing well. It puts so many things in perspective when someone we love is sick or injured doesn't it? Don't forget to take care of yourself in this time of stress as well. |
