My living room gets southern exposuser all day. Summer all day sun. Winter has cold winds. I now have blinds that are insulated plus drapes also insulated. Very much needed in this room. all 3 sides have large windowes. I am thinking of making them myself. Do any of you have Roman shades? Note: this room was a add on. NO HEAT. We put in a gas fireflace. There is nothing below the floor.' We put fencinging around outside and wrapped it in a heavy plastic. It does help. I guess this use to be a porch. Cleaning them? |

I have no ideas .but am in awe that you can make them yourself. |
I went out on line and found many ways to make them. Not hard. Just sewing straight lines but need right measerments. Not my best. So hubby will do that. Like I had said before. New sewing machine and I am on a roll!!!!!!!!!! |
I have roman blinds on a couple windows, and I like them. They seem to really work well. We just put them up a few months ago, so haven't got to the cleaning part yet.
But, if you are making them, you could leave one end of the sleeve that the dowel slides into open. Then you could slip out the dowel and throw them in the wash. I would think they would washup pretty easy, depending on the fabric you choose. Ours are a basic white, and made from a cotton broadcloth fabric. I would suggest prewashing and drying to shrink your fabric before you do the final measure and cut....or they may shrink the 1st time in the wash and be too small. |
I love Roman Shades but have a problem with the stack......the amount at top when pulled up. When I have the window open, I want the whole window open.....I love bright rooms and don't want to miss a single photon! So for me I'd have to figure the stack, add to overall length and mount high. The one time I had Romans, the stack hide some of the widow and drove me nuts!
I'm sure you've seen this site: http://terrelldesigns.com/howtomakeromanshades.htm I like the idea of quilts for the shade as it adds more insulation. But remember, a lot of cold air convects out the sides between the shade and wall. This is the main problem with all window coverings that hang away from the wall. If you can tolerate a solid valence down the sides and botton in which the shade will run, you'd have a better sealed window. Still I'm sure you and hubby will do a great job. It all looks harder than it is.......other than getting the pull cords the same lenght, |
I have custom flat roman shades-- actually these are exactly it, pattern and all:
http://www.theshadestore.com/product/fl ... rcid=27426 I like them a lot because you can open the bottom or top and control glare at any angle. I've had them for about 6 months and, insofar, the only cleaning (at least this material) they need is a quick wipe with a microfiber cloth. |
We've had heavy quilted roman blinds in our windows for years, and as we replace the windows themselves with better insulated ones, I'm switching over to wood levelors.
They really do help keep a room warmer, so for what you want them for, I think they would be a good idea...my biggest issues with them, though, are: 1- Ours are heavy...and after a shoulder injury (rotater cuff) a few years back, I found them slightly painful to raise and lower I know you have a simular problem, so make sure they are light enough for you! 2-Same as Sheepie-boss...I hate how so much of the window is covered at the top! 3-They are a pain to clean...I liked Got Sheep's idea about a removable dowel! |
