puppies and raw food

Hi there. We are getting our first OES this weekend! I have a question about feeding raw food to young puppies. We have a 9 year old Ridgeback. We feed him a combination of Solid Gold and a raw food from a local organic butcher who makes dog food. I'm wondering if our puppy, who will be 8 weeks old when we bring him home, is too young for raw food. I know I will have to slowly change over his food no matter what we feed him, but just thought I'd see if anyone had experience with raw food and puppies, and specifically OES puppies. Thanks so much for any info.

we raw feed, not when the OES were puppies though. Our Newf was raw fed from the beginning. From what I saw by 8 weeks they can eat just about anything an older OES can, adjusted for the size of the bones.
If you don't feed bones it isn't an issue. We do add Photoflex and Vit C along with other specific supplemens depending on the dog. And yes some nights dinner for the dogs take longer than dinner for us :D

Langley was raw fed from the time he came home - I am sure his mom will speak up too
Thanks. I don't usually feed bones other than marrow bones. I think I'll try him slowly on what I give our Ridgeback. The one time I tried him on raw chicken with bones he didn't do well at all. If you don't mind, I'll probably ask more questions as we go along. I'm sure lots will come up, and I will need to make use of all the knowledge available on this forum. Thanks, again. And, by the way, I am the one who replied to your post about a local club. We are near Saugerties.[/i]
Guest, Why not join our forum? If you have a new OES coming this is the place to be. Welcome ahead of time.
There is a few on the Forum that "Raw Feed" there OES from youngsters hopefully they will chime in.

Also if you google "BARF DIET" lots of info on raw feeding. If the pup comes to you and is not already being fed a "Raw Diet" then I would suggest you keep going with whatever there on by the breeder and gradually transition over to a raw diet to not cause tummy upsets with the variance in a diet your baby is already use too when he/she arrives..

Best wishes with your new baby and do join this group, wonderfull bunch with lots of help/advice when needed..

Cool - are you the one who took a young sheepdog to my vet in Earlton recently? Is your butcher in Cairo?

And I have read that raw is something yu don't need to transition to - dogs can switch to it immediately and apparently that is the best way to do it - wedid that with two of ours. One insisted on being coddled and coaxed along, but finally made the switch. Good luck!!!
There is also an OES forum for raw feeders. Its NaturalOES. They are all feeding raw I believe and can be quite helpful. I think the owner of the list is Judy who I beleive is on this forum as well?
Thanks so much for all the responses. I definitely am going to join. Maybe it's silly, but I was waiting to have my puppy and a photo to go along!

Kerry- no, not the same. Our butcher is in Kingston.

Our Sullivan is coming home this weekend. I'll join and post a photo right away.
I know Val's little Henry came already eating RAW. I remember Edy posting pictures of the pups standing around a chicken getting ready to start chewing   I wouldn't be surprised if Val has continued him on the raw food trail.

I've read feeding kibble and raw was not a good idea.....the dog's digestive systems do best with one or the other.
I've continued to feed Henry raw and also switched Maggie to raw as well. They both love it, especially the green tripe, which includes the stomach contents 8O

I went all out and now have a chest freezer in my garage with all sorts of delicacies for them, like chicken necks and feet. Henry just leaves whatever bones he doesn't want to handle. I've had to learn how much bone he can tolerate without getting blocked up but it is actually pretty easy to manage. I love what it does to their output, which is much less offensive than when Maggie was on a kibble diet.
Yep pretty soon after Langley came home he went on raw. Switch over right away. He had diarrhea probably from the stress of the flight and missing his family. But he hasn't had it since. Laika has been on it for over 2 years now and she is doing supper. I actually have a great grinder and grind the bones. You wouldn't even know there is bones it is so fine but they still get the benefit. Not the crunch kind from chicken I give marrow for that.

They are getting elk tonight!
Well, I'm no longer just a guest. We brought Sully home on Saturday and he is absolutely perfect. Maybe we're just having great luck for the first few days, but as of now he loves his crate, takes lots of naps, loves to play with the kids and is just about the most adorable thing ever. He hardly even wakes me up at night, I just seem to wake up when he moves around. Then I have been waking him from a sound sleep to take him out. I think tonight I'll let him sleep and see what happens. He's also completely on raw food. Thanks for all of your responses. Wish us luck!
He sounds perfect. :D
I'm glad you joined the forum. Sully sounds like a dream. :hearts: Good luck with him.
