panda stunned by fear...

this happened last night...it really makes no sense what so ever...

brian, panda and myself were taking our normal evening walk...as you saw by the video, we play in the park first then go for the neighborhood walk...we walk the same route pretty much every night..

about 3 minutes into that walk, we are walking in the street (because that street doesnt have sidewalks) and brian and i are talking...panda starts lagging a bit..which isnt unusual because she hates the leash...then i feel a tug....

i look back and panda is laying in the street...my first thought was a seizure....i bend down to her and she is cowering...she was trying to hide with in herself...her legs were trying to tuck underneath her, she was whining..she refused to get up but was crawling toward my legs (i was practically on top of her at this point) trying to hide her face in my shoes...

i have NEVER seen her do this...this lasted all of about 35 seconds or so...it wasnt a seizure..she was completely coherent...she barked, got up and was fine...we took her off the leash and for once she actually stayed pretty close to us...

there wasnt ANYTHING there to warrent her freak out...i mean nothing..i dont know if she got a whiff of something...i dont know...but i tell you, i have never been so scared....

poor panda...

she was fine the rest of the evening...although she did lay on top of me in bed..and it was HOT but i couldnt not let her do it...

i do know now..100%..this dog will never ever protect me in any circumstance....but that i would protect HER in the reverse.....

has anyones dog ever freaked out like that?????

Wow Darcy...I bet you were very concerned. Do you think she was in pain??? Maybe a tummy ache?? wanting to roll herself in a ball like that. Is she eating and eliminating ok??? Hope she is better on your walk tonight. Good thoughts for sweet Panda coming your way!!!! :D
could it have been a bug bite - maybe a sting on a foot?

I hope it wasn't something more, but some of them are just very large babies.
Hi D, may sound strange but dogs have an extra sense and I have heard it said they can see ghosts, I have had a similar expirience with my old boy Dash and although we walked the same way each evening occasionly he would cower down when walking past a certain area although this never bothered Hamish and up until this day still hasn't.

The definately can see, smell, sense and evn hear more than we can.
no she was fine....she took 2 large poops in the park..along with 2 wee's...and in the neighborhood, she took another poop and marked her route as usual.... all that is normal panda.....

she drank and ate normally...when we go home, she asked for her cookie, ate it and then drank..all routine....

did check her out though and there was nothing wrong....im still baffled....
That is very strange.. I hope your girl is back to her usual self.

Big Hugs Panda.
I agree with the ghost theory I was going to say the same thing... animals have that sense where they can see things we can't. It sounds like she just ran into someone from the other side. I know it sounds crazy but I believe........
Dogs definitely can see, hear and sense things we cannot. Sounds like there were no physical causes for the strange reaction. Something definitely scared her. The important thing is that you were there to comfort her. :)
I'm wondering....They sell these "animal deterrents" for cats, dogs, racoons, etc. They are used in people's gardens, lawns to keep animals from going in there. Its a square thingy whatever you call it that you use batteries for and when an animal comes within a certain range of it, it sends off a high pitched sound that we as humans cannot hear but he animal can and "learns" to stay out of that area. I was looking into one for my own yard to keep the stray cats out but was afraid my dogs while playing would set it off and they would get scared.

If someone has one on their property you probably won't even see it. But maybe someone does and Panda set it off just by walking by and the silent noise scared her?

Just a thought...
Ok, I know this is going to sound a bit goofy, but going back to Kerry's thought about stings or bites...

One day Bert was playing in our yard, perfecly normal and happy, when all of a sudden he started freaking out 8O whining, spinning in place and cowering!

My first thought was bee sting...but...when I got up close I happened to notice a *spider* crawling in the fur right around one of his eyes! I dont think it bit him...just weirded him out! Poor guy...I couldnt blame him!

Poor Panda...Poor you!!!! I hope it was something this simple!
I'd bet it was a weird smell or maybe a sound too soft (or too high or too low) for you guys to hear.

Hudson had the exact same reaction the first time he walked down the driveway past Sam, my new/old muscle car. He was terrified of it. Laid down, curled up, whimpered. On the way back in he was fine. I've no idea why it was such a stink the first time.

I bet in your dog's mind there's a very logical explanation for this. I wish we could pop in once in a while and get the answers.
Weird. Poor Panda.
ashley,

the house in front of which it happened...they have a dog...a chow...which is usually at that side gate barking as we pass.....he wasnt out last night..so i really dont think they had that...

im not sure what happened...but weird is truely the appropriate word......
Poor P, hope it was a one time event!
I have the same sort of reaction with Asterisk and this one park that we occassionally go to. There is this one part of the park that Asterisk just gets really scared at. There is never anybody there, nothing other than a trash can.

She will sit down and won't budge and she'll start to whine - every single time. I stopped going to that park. I would just tug her on the lead and she would cower for a few paces and then she'd be right as rain.

I always figured that she was sensitive to the energy there.
Not to scare you, but if it happens again something to think about:

Quote:
Complex Partial Seizures (aka Psychomotor or Behavioral) Seizures: are associated with bizarre or complex behaviors that are repeated during each seizure. People with complex partial seizures experience distortions of thought, perception or emotion (usually fear), sometimes with unusual visual, olfactory, auditory and gustatory sensations. If dogs experience the same things, it may explain the lip-smacking, chewing, fly biting, aggression, vocalization, hysterical running, cowering or hiding in otherwise normal animals. Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal distress, salivation, blindness, unusual thirst or appetite, and flank biting are other signs. There is an obvious lack of awareness though usually not lack of consciousness. Abnormal behaviors may last minutes or hours and can be followed by a generalized seizure. Complex partial seizures are usually associated with secondary epilepsy.

My guess is that she caught an odor or a sound that she associated with something to be fearful of, or maybe saw something, a shadow perhaps, she thought was another thing, one to be afraid of. Perhaps coyote or mountain lion scent if they are in your area?

I would try her on the same route again to see if there is something she associates with at that precise spot that causes a re-run. If so, just avoid going there again. Dogs can imagine things in their world that seem to be threats to them but aren't. It may have been a freak occurrence and you will never see this behavior again.
geeze susan...give me something else to worry about now.....
Given your ghostly experiences, I don't think it's insane to think she got a whiff of something weird.

That's exactly what I was thinking - your house ghost came along for the walk!

BTW, whatever happened with that?

you dont really want to know....you may think im slightly whacky but if i open my trap, youll think im insane....
Darcy,
Maybe they installed one to keep their Chow from going near the gate? Just a thought...I of course am a "believer" also and do not toss the idea of seeing ghosts or smelling them or sensing something we can't...

Now the seisures idead is a worry...
D
Although I've seen someone...or something in my house that my son claims to have seen several times... I'm not sure that I believe.....but...
I would be more inclined to say Panda saw or scented something that really spooked her to react in that way.
Let us know how she does on her next walk, Kathy
On the same kind of tip as the ghost thing, if dogs can sense things, perhaps she was picking up on an arguement someone had, or something bad that recently happened in that area. You know like when you walk in a room and you just know someone has just argued or been upset. Poor Panda, big hugs!

Okay, now that you've got our curiosity up, you HAVE to tell us the latest!! :plead:
My last yorkie would love to walk on grass in parks anywhere. I used to take one of the boys for guitar lessons and I used to stay in the car for 30 minutes or so. I took Misty with me once or twice and I used to walk her round this old graveyard, hadnt been used for years, more like a park that a graveyard. She hated it, she used to shake and wine and I ended up carrying her. Tried it a couple of times and she freaked out.Got her back in the car and she was fine.
My sister had a lovely sheltie called honey. Often she would sit in the living room and stare up one corner at the ceiling. There was absolutely nothing there or above the room. You couldnt hear anything or see anything. She did it once when I was there and it was quite scarey, the dog would just growl and stare!

Hopefully Panda wont do it again, imagine trying to carry a scared sheepie!
I don't have any ideas but wanted to send a hug to sweet Panda girl.
