My male OES

Hey kids,
Can anyone give me some info on male OES puppies and leg lifting? My 7 month old apparently hasn't picked up this trait from any of his other male aquaintances. Is this the only way that a male will learn to lift his leg, or does he just decide to start doing it one day? Is this potentially a good thing? I've heard that having a big male "marking his territory" all over the place can be more of a burden than a blessing. I was hoping that this might be beneficial in keeping the lawn looking a little more uniform, though. Any thoughts? This is my first personal pet, and the first male pet I've ever been around this much.
Thanks!

Hi Missy & Curtis!

Our male is 17 mths old now and he still doesn't always lift his leg. In fact I'd say he squats about 75% of the time...I've often wondered the same as I haven't been around male dogs much either. Anyone out there know??

Woof's just over six moths and has just started to cock his leg in the last month or so - We've managed to train him to go in one particular place in the garden though...
Hi gissymiss
Has your dog been desexed? Often if a dog is desexed before he starts cocking his leg he never ever starts to do that - which is a real blessing. I've had two dogs that were desexed before they started that habit and both of them squatted for life - bless 'em.

Smile - you're very fortunate. The strong smell of a male dog's urine was never a problem around the fences and hedges.

My Bentley never lifted a leg until we went on a walk with some very "well loved" trees. Instinct kicked in and he lifted. In our backyard however he sits. Go figure.
Max just started lifting his leg a few weeks ago, He is 18 months old now. I was kind of funny at first, he seemed to be experimenting with the habbit. The first time he lifted his front leg. I laughed so hard, I guess he didn't want to get any on his front foot. He has mastered the habit now, but sometimes he starts out lifting his leg, and finishes squatting. Go Figure. HE is fixed though. So I guess It is all in what the dog thinks is right.
Oh my! Aren't OESs the best! If nothing else you have a smile on your face all day. Even though I have a frozen shoulder, a lump on my head and the blackest bruise on butt you ever saw, I still went down laughing when he tripped me up!!! They are the ultimate loving clowns!
Oh my... a frozen shoulder?

My mother got two of those.

She went to the "leading upper extremities doctor" in Boston (name available on request :) )who told her that there's Good News and Bad News.

The good news: Once you get one, for some reason they never return.
The bad news: They can take up to two years to get better.

It took two years to get better. Then she got it in the other shoulder, and that only took a year to get better.

Don't let your shoulder freeze after an injury! Don't immobilize it if it hurts, but keep it in very gentle motion!

Also, physical therapy for a frozen shoulder should never hurt. If it hurts, it is too agreessive (again, according to this doctor.)

That first one, her first PT yanked and pulled and stretched so much that it hurt badly, and then for 2 days afterward. It was after a year of this that she saw The Doctor, and he sent her to his physical therapist. Then it got better over the course of a year.

For the second one, she was immediately entered into gentle PT and it was all better in a year.

I hope you have much better luck!

-Ron.

PS Gentle therapy was as follows: Take a medium (9 or 10 inches) ball, place it on a table, put the affected arm on top of the ball at the forearm, and sway the body gently so that the shoulder moves a little bit as the arm rolls a little bit under the forearm. Now THAT'S gentle!

PPS It gets better during the year, progressively... so it's not as if it is really really bad on day 364 then is great on day 365.

I wish you all the best.
