I've been researching sheepdogs and speaking to a breeder. The father has been OFA'd, but I am told that dams are not OFA'd. Why is that? Is HD only passed by the father/sire?? Your insights/explanations are most welcomed! PS. I have relied heavily on this site for information and find it most informative. |

Hi K.
I'm afraid you've been misinformed. I would be very weary of a breeder that says a DAM doesn't need to be certified! Both dogs, and hopefully all four of their parents should be certified by ofa for hips, as well as tested for eye conditions- many breeders also test for heart and thyroid health. I would steer clear of whomever told you that a dam wouldn't need to be tested! Even then, there is no 100% guaranty that your pup wouldnn't have health onditions, but the best way to stack the odds in your favor is to find a breeder who has multi generational good scores for their dog's health tests! Karen,
Thanks for the feedback. Upon hindsight, the breeder initially avoided the question (actually--ignored it). It wasn't until I quoted her webpage which expressly stated that both parents were OFA'd and asked for the dams OFA info, that the breeder then informed me that dams do not need to be OFA'd. I should of spotted it myself, but appreciate your help. K. |
Hey no problem! Have you checked out the OFA website yet? It's a great tool to use when trying to find out which breeders are testing their dogs and which aren't. Just another tool for your puppy purchasing arsenal! Welcome to the forum by the way!

Good luck in your search! Welcome to the forum as well!
Have you contacted the OESCA breeder referal? The contact is Tarja Peters and you can contact her at oescrazy2@yahoo.com |
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'll make contact today. |

Hello. After going through what we are currently going through, my advise is to NEVER get an OES puppy whose parents have not both been OFA certified. It still does not guarantee that you won't have problems, but it means you have a much smaller chance. We have 2 seven month old puppies and are looking at surgery on at least one hip, both have different levels of HD. Good luck! |
They should DEFINITELY be OFA'd! If you do use the OFA site, remember to check all variations....some people have registered the kennel name with apostrophe and others from the same kennel don't...if you can't find the OFA, contact the breeder for the paperwork. There is also a "lag" time in the paperwork and other problems that crop up! So if you don't find the info right off, don't assume it hasn't happened : ) I've used the DL number and NOT found the info, and then used the kennel name and found it...lots of operator errors can happen : )
If in doubt of any information you are given by a breeder, go to the Old English Sheepdog Club of America website and read the information on Breeder Ethics. They pretty much spell out what they expect as a minimum requirement from responsible breeders! Best wishes! |
Thank you all for your supportive advice. I have terminated my inquiries with the breeder and am now pursuing leads wtih breeders listed with the org. I am soooo grateful.
