Wal Mart Receipts..... YES! THIS IS TRUE! It happened to me at Wal-Mart (Supercenter Store > #1279, 10411 N Freeway 45, Houston , TX 77037 ) a month ago. I bought a > bunch of stuff, over $150, & I glanced at my receipt as the cashier was > handing me the bags. I saw a cash-back of $40.. I told her I didn't request > a cash back & to delete it. She said I'd have to take the $40 because she > couldn't delete it. I told her to call a supervisor. Supervisor came & > said I'd have to take it. I said NO! Taking the $40 would be a cash > advance against my Discover & I wasn't paying interest on a cash > advance!!!!! If they couldn't delete it then they would have to delete the > whole order. So the supervisor had the cashier delete the whole order & > re-scan everything! The second time I looked at the electronic pad before I > signed & a cash-back of $20 popped up. At that point I told the cashier & > she deleted it. The total came out right. The cashier agreed that the > electronic pad must be defective. Obviously the cashier knew the electronic > pad was defective because she NEVER offered me the $40 at the beginning. > Can you imagine how many people went through before me & at the end of her > shift how much money she pocketed? > > _____ > > Just to alert everyone. My co worker went to Milford DE Walmart last week. > She had her items rung up by the cashier. The cashier hurried her along and > didn't give her a receipt. She asked the cashier for a receipt and the > cashier was annoyed and gave it to her. My co worker didn't look at her > receipt until later that night. The receipt showed that she asked for $20 > cash back. SHE DID NOT ASK FOR CASH BACK. My co worker called Walmart who > investigated but could not see the cashier pocket the money. She then called > her niece who works for the bank and her niece told her this. There is a > scam going on. The cashier will ask for cash back and hand it to her friend > who is the next person in line. Please, Please, please check your receipts > right away when using debit cards. The store has the cashier under > investigation now. We can only pray that she is caught very soon.. > > I am adding to this. My husband and I were in WalMart North Salisbury and > paying with credit card when my husband went to sign the credit card signer > he just happen to notice there was a $20 cash back added. I was behind an older lady at the checkout at Walmart a few months ago. The cashier handed the lady $20 with her receipt. The lady was confused thinking the cashier was making a mistake. But it was definitely one of those things that pops up at Walmart and so it is easy to do.
I always watch to make sure I did not accidentally touch a cash back button there now. Plus I always have an idea what my total should be and check my receipt. At the time I just thought it was an annoying way to get you to take a cash advance. I never thought of it in terms of the cashier stealing. Sounds like the above story has legs based on my personal experience. |
Here is Snopes' reply. Very unlikely, but they're not fully ruling it out.

I heard this on the radio this morning. It's funny how things like this pop up all of a sudden. I don't think it's a mega-scam like they're making it seem like. |
I went to a Wal Mart in Palm Bay on Malabar rd about a month or so ago. I know I didn't not hit the "yes" button for cash back and I know I didn't hit the "$100" in cash button. Anyway, to my surprise the cashier handed me $100 in cash. I told her I didn't hit the button for cash back and certainly didn't hit it for $100, but it was indeed taken out of my account...granted the money was handed over to me, but I know there had to be an error in their key pad or system. I ALWAYS check my receipts at every store I got through before I leave the building. |
I just get a favorite cashier at all the places I go to. Many benefits to that ...to include knowing you won't have some rookie slow poke, to them wanting to go out of their way for you. Also less likely to cheat you. I realize I may go more regularly than some though! |
Ooooh! A crooked cashier thread!
I started an article about this in our "Food for Thought" section: http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=26459 |
This is an email forward that has been circulating (in one version or another) for the last couple years. |

A couple of weeks after this happening to me, my hubby had a similar experience in the same Wal Mart, but the cash amount was $40. He also always checks his receipt at the cash register. He swears his did not hit "cash back" or an amount. There does seem to be a problem at Wal Mart. |
while the ‘story’ in this email warning may be unsubstantiated (http://www.oes.org/page2/26456~Wal_Mart ... eware.html), the SCAM ALERT IS REAL!! and was put out by the BBB (better business bureau) and a news agency in dec 2009. http://www.bbb.org/us/post/cashier-receipt-scams-1061 http://www.komonews.com/news/consumer/7 ... =video&c=y |
In the uk you have to sign for cash back at the tills |
I read this original post the other day and didn't really give it much thought. When I was at walmart the other day (sorry to admit I was there at all) I noticed that when you run your card now the first thing that pops up -even before you enter your PIN is the question, do you want cash back. I guess they know this has been a problem in some stores and have changed the procedure. I never get cash back though, so I don't know what would happen next anyway. (and I ALWAYS check my receipts. ALWAYS.) Shellie |
