My wife and I are new to dog ownership so we want to make sure we don't make any mistakes . Our puppy Bentley is very nippy and tries to bite people on the hand. I think it's cute but don't want it to become a bad habbit. How can I get him to stop this? I have a chew ball that he will take but he quickly looses intrest and comes back for the hands. A loud no from my wife sometimes works but he totally disregards me! Any ideas? Thanks in advance! |

depends on how old he is? Best idea is to scream loudly when he bites (in a pack situation another puppy would yelp) then walk away from him or turn your back, you need to stop this quickly. |
Learning not to bite (bite inhibition) is something he would have learned from his litter mates, but, since you guys are now his "litter mates" in his eyes he is simply playing with you. Just like KTB said, give a LOUD yell, like "OUCH" or something and get up and leave him by himself. That is how his litter mates would have treated him. Our Bailee did the same thing and the yell and "isolation" thing really worked well. |
As a young puppy, Winnie was way too bitey and nippy. We worked hard on this issue for a long time. Among the things that worked: stuffing a toy in her mouth, reacting LOUDLY as folks here have suggested, and after reacting loudly isolating the puppy either by moving away and ignoring her, or putting her in "time-out." We also found that she was far more likely to bite/nip when she was tired, so we set a regular routine of exercise and naps. Young puppies need up to 16 hours of sleep per day, we discovered.
We weren't sure we'd make it through the biting/nipping stage but she FINALLY grew out of it around 6 months of age. Just in time for teething! |
When my puppies bit, or rather "nibbled" on my hands or feet, I stopped what I was doing and turned around and ignored them. I simply said "No" or "no nibbling" and turned around. They quickly got the hint. I find yelling or loud noises don't work with my dogs. I also would shove a soft toy in their mouth so they would know not to chew me, but to chew the toy instead. Just my humble 2 cents. |
The only pup I have had is deaf so, yelling did nothing!!!!
(maybe I would have felt better) When he tried biting me, I tucked his little lips under so, he bit himself... Didn't take him long to figure it out! I am not saying I didn't go through some pj pants without tears that is puppyhood! A baby OES can be a challenge even for the best!! (I say this as my 15 m/o just carried a pillow to me ) Obedience class, is a wonderful thing where your pup will learn to respect you! I also would suggest touching toes, massaging , putting your fingers in the ear a little to get them used to the whole thing. Grooming is a HUGE part of an oes life!! Oh and those ears can get icky in a heart beat if not kept clean! Good Luck with your pup...you have come to the right place for advice!! |
