mitral valve dysplasia

My one year old OES was just diagnosed with a very mild mitral valve dysplasia. Anyone familiar with this?

She wasn't showing any symptoms and acts perfectly normal but the Vet found a heart murmur on examination. We went back ten days later and the heart murmur was more pronounced so we went for an echo cardiogram.

Both doctors say it is very mild, nothing to worry about but we will monitor it maybe once a year. She's so young...I'm worried.

Kudos to your vet for catching it. Even though it's scary and may not feel like it right now, it's better to know. Keep her lean or at least make sure she doesn't carry excess weight, and, as your vets suggest, you just monitor to see if there's any progression and remember to breathe in between. She's not going anywhere any time soon, right?

I don't know anything specific about this but is has got to be encouraging that two vets described it as mild and told you not to worry <yeah, right! >

There are plenty of mild heart conditions that dogs live with their entire lives that never affect them. A friend had an OES many years ago who was born with a hole in heart. She lived to be 12, got her UDX, and her heart was never a problem. Mind you, there are certain implications for her breeder so it would be very helpful if you could just inform them so they know that there is conceivably a problem.

Once you get passed the initial shock it'll be OK. Promise. It's so hard to look at a baby dog and realize that something could conceivably be wrong, but keep reminding yourself that two vets characterized it as mild and told you not to worry. <did I mention "yeah, right!"? >

Marley has a heart murmur .
The vet picked it up when he was 2 at his yearly vacs.Marley showed no signs that he was having trouble with his heart.
My vet has put Marls on Vetmedin to open his blood vessels up to take some of the pressure off his heart. Also he is on a low salt diet and he gets mint(natural diuretic) added to his food .

Marls is due for his yearly heart and salt level check in a couple of weeks time so i have my fingers crossed as his salt levels were a bit high last time.

I have a friend with a dog(toby) that was diagnosed with a murmur when he was 1 .Toby is now 12 years old and is as fit as any 12 year old that i know :D
Oh, thank you for trying to ease my mind. It is so hard to see my baby girl who is never sick and is just the sweetest little baby now having this problem. We found it by accident. Both my dogs picked up kennel cough and in examining for that, the vet first said she had a level one heart murmur and it was probably due to her fighting an infection.

We went back ten days later for a recheck and the murmur was still there - only he said it was more pronounced, level 2. So we went off to get the echo cardiogram. The rest is history!

I haven't found much info on the internet but still searching so anyone else who wants to chime in with info, its appreciated!

And yes, I did inform the breeder. She is very reputable, off the referral list so I'm sure she will be surprised and concerned. I beleive both parents were tested for this and were okay. I guess sometimes it starts somewhere. We should be so lucky in Lotto.
