They are running a blood panel and gave her subq liquids with anitbiotics. She has had no diarrhea as yet. I have heard about Tamiflu helping. Does anyone know a dosage? I have some for adults. |
|
I wouldn't give my dog any medication unless it came from the vet - sorry I know it is tempting.
Vomitting can be casued by so many things - IMHO you really need to keep her hydrated (per the vets instructions) and wait for the test results, they should be back quickly. |
Why do they suspect parvo?
And ditto what Kerry said about not giving her anything off label w/o knowing what's wrong and w/o vet' say so. How is she doing? Kristine |
I found the dosage on the internet and I spoke to the vet. She said that she couldn't legally tell me to do it, but that she couldn't see how it would do any harm. So I did it. I will let you all know how it comes out.
The reason it was so urgent is that the Tamiflu only works if you get it in to them before the diarrhea starts. Her blood count is pretty much ok, her WBC are a little down, but they said that could be stress. We had a 12 hour window for the Tamiflu. If she is going to come down with it, it will be evident in the next 12 hours. Hopefully this will all be moot and she will be fine. |

Her lethargy and vomiting. My son also brought over a puppy 10 days ago that has just been diagnosed with Parvo. |

Hope she is okay!! Please keep us updated. My fingers are crossed. |

That's good Her age is in her favor if her immune system is generally OK. Kristine |
Hope everything is going OK for Lola. |
She hasn't vomited since this morning. She is in her crate, eyes open, but lethargic. It is soooo unlike my busy girl. At least her head is up occasionally. |
Oh no poor girl I hope she feels better soon! |
Fingers crossed that it is not Pravo. |
We are back at the vet. Lola had a huge seizure and vomited blood when we got here. |
Oh I am sorry |
That doesn't sound good.
for better luck the rest of the evening and overnight. |
Oooh.
I'm so sorry. I hope she'll be better soon. |
Thinking of you all and hoping for a speedy recovery and back to bouncy full on self real soon.
|
My thoughts are with you. I know how stressful it is when our sheepies are sick!
Keep us posted! |
Thoughts and prayers for all of you.
It is so hard when they are ill. |

Same here! What bad luck. |
Thank you all so much for all of your kind words. Lola is at the Vets on supportive care. Her seizures continued and she was vomiting straight blood. She has blood in her lungs. The vet assumes it is from a toxin. We have 3 other dogs who so far are fine. Thank god. We have looked all through our home and yard and can find nothing. Our house has been dog proofed for over a decade. We can't imagine where this came from. We are just praying that she makes it through the night. I gave her a very stern talking to and reminded her that she is LOLA. The worlds most stubborn and strong dog. I also reminded her that she waited her whole life to get to a home where she would be loved and adored. Now is not the time to let go. I swear, the minutes she is better, if that happens, I am taking her to dog beach to run in the water. I was working on her recall before I did that. I will chase her if I have to, but she will know the joy of running in the waves...please pray that this happens for my sweet baby girl....thanks so much... |
Oh no!!!
Sending healthy thoughts to Lola. |
Poor Lola--Special thoughts and prayers for her and your family. All paws and fingers crossed for an uneventful night. |
Prayers and good thoughts for Lola and you.
|
Well, she has gone 4 hours with no seizures and no vomiting blood. Keep those prayers coming! |
Prayers continue. And going 4 hours without any more symptoms is a great start.
Go LOLA, go! |
Oh no...poor Lola and Mom!
I hope she is okay.... So sad |
Keeping positive thoughts for darling lola flowing.
Toxins, it is amazing what even though you may think a house and yard is doggie proof. For instance an older house, painted wood or bits lying around with old paint on it, could contain in the paint LEAD. Happened here a few years back with a friends sheepie. The dog started seizing, they found out he was also chewing on the old painted wood. Plant toxins too, I am always amazed at what some plants contain. I always have a list now to what is suitable to have in the garden with dogs. Sending prayers and good positive thoughts lola will be OK. |
6 hours, no vomit or seizures. Breathing is still funky though.
Our house is fairly new and we cleared all of our plants with the Dr. We are going to keep looking though. We have 3 other 4 legged babies at home. What really sucks about this is how careful we are. They don't play in our small backyard unsupervised. We have a dog run just for them. They are only out there when doing their business. They are indoor dogs. My house is always tidy, nothing laying around. I just don't get it. The only time she leaves here is when we go to a very clean, new dog park. She is supervised the whole time. There are no low plants, just small trees. If there was anything toxic in our yard, you would think the plant shredding 11 month old retriever would have found it long ago.... |
I am glad she seems to be stabilizing, and I hope she continues to improve. |
I have to tell ya'll, I had never even met a Sheepie before Lola. I now can't imagine life without one. She is such a smiling nutty clown. She lights up a room. I love the sweetness of her klutzy spirit. I love how she manages to soak my face with one lick. I even love her giant bear paws. At least I know you people understand what I mean. Sheepies rule! |
Sheepies are the best!
Do you by any chance live in an area with rats? Strychnine & warfarin are used to control rodents populations in some places - and it doesn't take much to cause problems. Just a random thought in the middle of the night. |
The rat angle was one of the first things I asked. We don't use poison or anything, but you never know about the neighbors. Her clotting factors were all normal which ruled that out. GMTA, huh?
Current Lola update: 9 hrs, no vomiting or seizures. Respiration is getting a little better. Still weak and resting comfortably. Let's hope she's turned a corner. I miss my fuzzy baby. Poor Lily, our retriever, was getting 'overloved' tonight... |
I haven't been following your weatehr - but the usual culprit here is mushrooms. Glad to hear she is hanging on. |
kerry wrote: I haven't been following your weatehr - but the usual culprit here is mushrooms. Glad to hear she is hanging on.
That was my thought They pop up here overnight and it's hard to clear them fast enough. Lately it's been toads, though. Not toadstools, but the actual toads. My dogs think they're a toy. Not. What do you have of toxic critters in your part of the world? The fact that she is (hopefully still ) stabilizing is encouraging A talented sheepdog that wants to get into something is going to find a way no matter how hard you proof. Ask Sybil Kristine |
I was wondering about mushrooms too. However, we are in southern california and in a drout state. We can't even water more than a couple of time a week. I am going to go and walk the dog park today though. I didn’t see any, but that doesn't mean there weren't any. The Dr is calling me in a few minutes with an update. I was told no seizures over night. We'll see what he says about her respiration. |

Ask Sybil Kristine I asked about snakes, spider and scorpions. Not that I have ever seen any, but it IS Southern California. They didn't think so because she had no bites or sore areas. They said that normally it would start to kill off the bite area. I had even found a lizard egg empty and asked about that. They said no. Keep all the ideas coming. I know I have been too upset to think of everything... |
LOLA IS COMING HOME! They won't say she is 100% out of the woods, but she is walking around and alert. No seizures or vomit for the whole night and her respiration is getting better. We have to keep her quiet for a couple of days. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL OF YOUR PRAYERS! It appears that it may have worked! |
That is great news! |
Just as a side note, I saw my first grown Sheepie at the vets yesterday. I wish I could have gone and said hello. At that point we were still worried about Parvo though. She was a true bob tail as she had none. Lola has a BIG fluffy one. |
yeah!!!!!!!!! |
WELCOME HOME LOLA!!!!!
Get well SOON!!!!!! |
I hope Lola continues to improve so she can go to the dog beach with you. I'm glad to hear she's on the mend. I wonder what the heck caused it though. |
Keepin my fingers crossed!!! |
Yay!!!!
Great news. Go Lola. Wishing you a speedy recovery. |
Lola is home and doing well so far. She is weak, but just barked for the first time. LOL. |
I bet she recovers faster now that she's back home with her pack (4 and 2 legged). There's no place like home. |
Keep up the recovery Lola |
YIPPEEEE!!! |
THe only thing I could get her to eat right away was doggie junk food. (moist & meaty). We have it laying around for meds and such. BUT, she just ate a good amount of her regular food! Yeah!
Ya'll should see my back yard. It looks like a wasteland. Hubby has pulled out EVERYTHING but the crepe myrtles. C'est la vie. We will start over and make sure EVERYTHING is dog friendly and not bushy. Just glad to have my baby back. |
Wonderful news that she is home and eating!
I have to wonder if your husband thinks he is going to get out of yardwork with it cleared out? Seriously, that is awesome that he was willing to do that for the dogs. |
My husband would do anything for our puppies. He ROCKS!
Lola is feeling good enough to munch on a chew toy. |
I am so glad that Lola is home and improving! It is late but I had to come an check on how she was doing! So glad it is happy news!! |
I am so glad Lola is fine. When Summer was really ill we never did find what she ate....think Sheepies must have really sensitive insides. xx |
LolasMama wrote: THe only thing I could get her to eat right away was doggie junk food. (moist & meaty). We have it laying around for meds and such. BUT, she just ate a good amount of her regular food!
Being well accostumed to barfing dogs - you do want to go slowly with her food. the digestive system will be sore and iritated for a couple of days. Glad to hear she is feeling well though. |
I am thinking it may have been a plant in my house. Dieffenbachia. I'll never be sure, but you can bet it's gone. |
just caught up on lola so glad she is doing better hang in there what a week you had |
So happy Lola is feeling better |
LolasMama wrote: I am thinking it may have been a plant in my house. Dieffenbachia. I'll never be sure, but you can bet it's gone.
definitely a potential source. |
I never worried about my plants because most of them are fake.
When Lola joined our family, I moved a plant into our dining room. Lola is not allowed in there unsupervised. HOWEVER, there is a period of time in the morning when my Father (he lives with us) is up with the puppies. I have repeatedly told him to crate Lola until I get up. He has repeatedly ignored me. He just hates to lock her up and he gets too distracted to watch her. I have told him it is like letting a toddler run around unsupervised. I just can't seem to make him understand. <sigh> |
Gina, sort of timely, perhaps.
(This morning out of the blue a new batch of mushrooms appeared in the yard ) Anyway, this came across today. Thanks so much for that. I will listen to it!
Lola is SMILING again! Woohoo! I think we are over the hump! |
http://homepage.mac.com/ginahankerd/filechute/LolaSmiling.jpg |
Yay Lola!! She's looks fabulous! |
Can anyone tell me why it won't imbed? Thanks! |
Lola's Mom, I feel your frustration. My father lives with us too! I repeatedly tell him to put my 1 year old Bella in her crate when he isn't around to watch her. He repeateldy ignores me too. SAying he doesn That old fashion mentality!
Glad to hear Lola is doing better. Did you figure out what the culprit was? was it the mushrooms? We have spent a near fortune "cleaning out" our yard. Holly trees came down, flowers came out and we are now looking to take down an oak tree because the acorns are starting to come down which are poisonous. The things we do for our doggys! |
HA! I think I figured it out....
|
Ashley wrote: Did you figure out what the culprit was? was it the mushrooms?
We haven't found any mushrooms, but I think it may have been an indoor plant I had... |

Glad she is doing well and smiling again!
We were sure worried! |
Her recovery has been nothing short of remarkable. Her own vet was telling us to prepare ourselves to say goodbye. I still feel like I should be pinching myself to make sure it is real. She still makes the occasional coughing noise. That is the only way we can even tell anything happened. I think it was all of your prayers! |
I'm so glad she's doing better |
Great that Lola is so much better. She certainly looks a lot more like her old self.
I used to have lots of lovely indoor plants including some beautiful diffenbachia (they're a favorite of mine). They were all up high out of reach. Then I got a siamese cat. |
Mim wrote: Then I got a siamese cat.
BAAAHHHHHAAAAAHHHHAAAAHHHHAAAAA! |
