Help..new OES

Hello,
My name is Tammy and we just adopted a 6 yr old OES a couple of days ago, she is very well trained, excellent wiht the kids, and very loving always wanting to be around us :D My question is...she had been shaved in her other home, and we would love her hair to grow back out and do the regular grooming on her. Will her hair ever grow out and get longer again?? Or will she stay short hair (kinda choppy look)?? She loves to be brushed!! Any advise on what I can do to help would be great!
Thanks, tammy

Tammy,

Rest assured that your OES will regrow her hair out. A healthy Bobtail being fed a good food can be expected to have an initial hair growth rate of about an inch per month. If the hair isn't growing substantially by late March you may need to add a few supplements such as a fish/fish oil, linatone, cheese etc.
You have a great head start with her already liking grooming so even though she may not need it right now groom her as a matter of routine. That way you get used to it and she stays in practise. Come summer grooming won't be a choice!! The hair will also tend to "blend" itself and the choppyness will quickly even out. (I post primarily on grooming topics and seem to be reasonably well received although there are many other capable members. Please don't hesitate to post or pm for help or just general discussion.)

You didn't say if this is your first OES. If she is and you need help there is an incredible wealth of information and help across all the forums here, read up on the threads where you need help and post questions on any topics that may be unlisted or "stale".

Welcome aboard and enjoy your newest child and thanks for helping one of our older ones who was in need.

Cheers

We found a product called Vitacoatplus, available through the
Drs Foster and Smith catalog helped our puppy enhance the
condition of his coat.
Hi NYTammy!

Carl pretty much said everything (How come he knows so much about grooming??) So... Welcome to the forum! You're really lucky if you have a sheepie that likes to be groomed. Enjoy your sheepie, you'll see that your doggie will be shaggy in no time!
Hi Tammy,

Belle's fur was about and inch long when I got her in late September and now it's 5" or so. Every time I look at her I decide I like her just like that and then I realize that she looks different all the time!

One of the great things about her fur is that I can do what I think is a terrible job of trimming (face, chin, paws) and just a few days later you can't even tell, it all blends together.

Be patient, it will come back. Keep making grooming a very pleasurable experience. If you can do it long enough the doggie actually falls asleep under your kind hands, give praise!! Grooming a full coat OES can take hours, so if your pupper will relax that long, Hooray. Work on it now.

Vitamins or oil fish help with hair. Try adding a dab (initially) of salmon, mackerel or sardines in oil to the pupper's diet. Go slow, it can cause problems out the other end.
