hope you do, too! * * * Aprons !! * * * { ANYONE REMEMBER THEM ?? The History of 'APRONS' I don't think our kids know , what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few,it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about Grandma's aprons. REMEMBER: Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. * I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron !!!! * |

I love that! And, I still love aprons! |
ditto! I like aprons too. |
Funny b/c we all had the same response to reading this. I can't live without my dirty apron. |
I love aprons too. |
thanks for bringing back so many memories of my mom and grandma's aprons |
My mom and grandmas never wore aprons. I always felt that was wrong, like I got cheated out of something. I have one apron and always feel so secure when I wear it. Weird. |

Paula, come for dinner...I'll wear an apron. When my mom used to get new aprons they were required to have pockets, for her cigarettes and matches! |
When I was a child, I remember my Mom wearing an apron all the time, but I also remember her always wearing a "house dress". Did any of your mothers also wear house dresses? My Mom was also a nurse and always wore a dress to work. I don't know how they did it with all the bending and such they had to do.
Also, do any of you remember when women started to wear the "pant suit" to work. If you wore pants to work you where sent home like a child and made to change.... ahhh memories. |
My mom was a nurse too!!!! Yes, she wore house dresses..and she wore "model coats"! Do you remember those? Today is a sad for me. My mom died 36 years ago today...so she is really on my mind. I'm really glad I found this topic. Pants suits! Always makes me think of All in the Family, and Edith's pant suit. Oh! Edith had a housedress like one my mom had, and when I see it (it was majorly ugly) in re-runs , i laugh! |
My mother wore house dresses and an apron but not all the time. I think more often when cooking a feast than the "regular" daily meals. |
My Mom also wore house dresses and a apron. AND hose everyday. No bare legs. At least that is what I remember.
On Sept 27 she will be gone 49 years. She took her own life 6 weeks after my Dad died of a massive heart appack. They were both only 48 yrs old. I feel lucky to be in mid 60's and my sister is almost 70. I still love APRONS. infact I just got one but not what they wore. Mine is what the chefs use. It is black and I plan on useing it as a pattern to make lots of colors! |
