Well...weve survived a very odd week here. First of all there was the horrendous smoke from the many, many wildfires raging here in Alaska's interior (80+ fires at last count )...then the (gladly welcomed) pouring rain, and now Im just freezing my butt off (not to mention my poor sheepie's freshly shaven butts! ) in the 35-45F temps that have come in to replace the 75-85F ones from last week. *SIGH* Sales are ok...but the smoke is keeping the crowds low. Yes...even in the pouring rain...there was still smoke!!! It was very bizarre to still smell smoke through the rain. People with respiratory problems are still being advised to stay indoors. At one point Fairbanks was almost completely ringed with fires, and we could even see the glow all around the horizon...creepy! A few of them have been knocked back from the rain, so its not as scary now. Further whiny updates probably to follow! For now, Im off to try and sell some art. |

Oh MY!! I'll have to write my friend from High School up there!
Glad your okay. From someone who worked for the Forest Service for 6 years (took time off from nursing) and LOVED going to fire camps (good money) to work.. good pay!! We had a 'spell' here with internet too last week. no one could get into windows........ opened up computer today anad no problem. go figure! |
Hope things get better and warmer but not due to a fire on your doorstep. |
It is great to hear from you Laurel. I'm sorry to hear about the fires. They can be very scary. We just went through our Fire time this past Spring.
I'm sorry you are freezing!!! Hopefully soon you will get warm again soon. Good luck with your sales and put some blankets on those sheepies. |
I am sorry you are not having better weather, but you know that at the fair there is only two temptures, hot enough to cause you to fry like an egg and the refrigerator temp that say winter is coming. As for the smoke, I say get some goggles and a breathing mask and go for a post nucular war look. If nothing else you will really stand out from the smoking crowd.
I know Lizzie is not funny, odd but not funny. |
So great for you - with friends like this, who needs enemies?! LOL
Glad you got some internet. I hope the weather straightens out a bit. All that smoke is hard on the eyes and lungs..... |
DH's building is empty of young studs and studetts who are on detail to combat the Alaskan fires. You bet DH isn't going, such youngster foolishment is long past him. He retires in 4.5 months with 53(?) years. |
The promised whiny update:....
Last night's temps dropped below freezing... So...did I mention the heat AND the electrical in my trailer had stopped working? Scott is back in Anchorage... he helped me set up and do the first weekend, then flew home to work through the week at his job...he'll fly back here on Friday to help me through the last weekend. Soooo....only the two Bobtails for "shared body heat" My neighbor loaned me a small space heater, and I ran an extension cord from my booth, in through a window of the trailer. Of course, I couldn't safely run in during the night while we slept, but it helped to warm things up a bit before we went to bed. I was really worried about the group of college kids who work my next door neighboring booth, sleeping in a tent ...but apparently various kind folks gave them all spare sleeping quarters in trailers with heat. Have I mentioned how much I love my job? I love my job...I love my job ...I love my job... |
oh no - the heat issue sounds pretty bad! (or rather lack of heat)
I hope things improve for you |
