My dogs have been known to use the treadmill when we have too much bad weather - but not for their energy level, just to keep muscle tone. You will find that the energy drain isn't the same as walking outside because you really need to be exercising their mind - which as a treadmill user myself - a treadmill isn't going to do. besides you think a treadmill is boring to use, try standing next to one whilr your dog uses it.
And of course your dog could use their creative mind to figure out a fun game using the tm like my boy who unexplainedly LOVES to go flying off the back. You would be better off figuring out games and activities to keep the pup busy mentally. |
Laika loves it; when I am done she gets on while I do the rest of my work out. I don't even tell her she just gets on when I am done.
I actually should have had it going a little bit faster. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjx9vyouDRI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uLj2wRYcYM |
We love the treadmill and so does Yuki. It was great considering her other option was doing nothing. She hasn't done it in a long time b/c "I havent," but her and my maltese used to be daily users. She gets walks at night now but only because our upright boys want to go outside.
I just put her on a leash, stood over her then set it on the lowest setting holding the leash up. Granted she was used to the sound of it, so there was a little advantage, but it did scare her when it moved the first few times. My maltese got it the very first time. Had a frightened look, but then again, she always did ...either way, she didn't try to jump off like Yuki did the first 5 times or so. They both stayed on for 10 min each time, with Yuki having a higher setting because her legs were longer. After awhile, I didn't have to stand over them and they hopped on wanting to do it. |
