Greg called the vet and they said as it had stopped bleeding, probably didn't need stitches and no need to bring him in. It's about 1cm across, but you can see the flesh inside. My question is, what should I clean this with? Is salt water OK? Twice a day? (Greg called the police, they will be visiting the house and will let us know the outcome, I think they will request he is muzzled) |

just so you know for dogs - face wounds are considered fair game and the issue may be something you aren't aware of - like Ru may be exhibiting some sort of attitude that only dogs can pick up on - or the boxer is a bully. Either one causes the same response.
We have always been told to use triple antibiotic on the dog bites (when my two were puppies they tended to chew on each other ) |
Better not to stitch it, unless it really gapes or flaps open. Dogs (like human) bites are germy things. Closing it up would trap whatever may be in the wound and cause a nasty infection.
I did have a face bite on one of my foster bassets stitched up, but this is a breed with lots of loose floppy skin already! Clean it really thoroughly, with whatever your vet recommends. An antibiotic ointment, as Kerry suggests, is what I would use as well. We use it on humans with wounds and sutures to keep it clean and moist. Heals better with less scarring. |
That is horrible.
Let's hope this doesn't instil any fear into Ru! The dog should not be left unattended loose on the street. They should be forced to not only muzzle it, but fence the dog in properly. They should also pay your vet bills! Is Greg okay? |
Poor doggie
Glad it seems he will get better and glad Greg called the police!!!!!! |
Did the vet recommend something? For minor wounds, I keep Chlorhexidine
shampoo on hand. This wound might be too deep though so be sure to ask. I'm glad you reported it. You should be able to walk your dog without fear of him being attacked. Hopefully the owners will understand they need to provide better containment and supervision for this dog because of his quirks. And hopefully they'll do the right thing and at least make an offer to pay any medical bills if he needs to go in for an antibiotic. Our instinct is to lash out at the dog but in the end it's really the owners who are to blame. |
Poor Rufus! I hope it hasn't put him off other dogs. I hope you are all of..xx |
Poor Ru!!!!!!!
I hope he heals well and quickly. |
Please give Ru a big hug from us. I hope he heals quickly. |
If I remember it's hard to get antibiotic cream there w/o a doctor's script. Just keeping the wound clean and moist should work. Once a way a nice warm/wet pack to clean and soften the skin so scabs don't form slowing the healing.
We've had plenty of bit wounds here when Sam was alive. Now we have Harry who snaps his skin on any staub he can find. We trim away the hair, keep it clean, and yes, we can readily get antibiotic cream which I also used initially. |
Sorry to hear about Ru, years ago the law used to be one bite free by the second the dog had to be put down, I do not know if it still exists. Misty sends a big for Ru |
Poor Ru!! And Greg.
Rastus says to tell Ru it will get better fast. When the border collie bit him on the shoulder and ripped his skin in Jan we went to the vet. Same advice just keep it clean and no stitches to help stop it festering. As we were at the vet he did get an antibiotic injection. I bathed it with an antiseptic wash each day. Fortunately after 2 or 3 days of Rastus being a bit nervous around strange dogs he was back to his usual happy go lucky self. I did have him straight back to a park as soon as the wound was closed over but kept him on lead so I could make sure other dogs didnt lick the wound. He smelt very interesting. |
Hope Ru heals up quickly! |
aww poor RU. Other BAD DOG!!!! Hope they do muzzel him!
Do you havea leash law there? |
Poor Ru!!! the girls send him a big |
Ru seems to be fine, it's healing up OK and he didn't show any signs of stress when I walked him earlier.
He's not trying to scratch the wound either, which is great. I can't get any antibiotic cream without a script, but I'm using boiled salt water to clean it. I don't think we have leash laws here as such? I don't even know!! Not heard anything about the incident yet. |
Law as it stands at present is reasonably clear.

Dutch sends hugs to Ru cause she knows all about that , Dutch had her ear bitten , it looked ok the first day and I just washed it out with soap and water but by the next day it was all ucky so off to the vet we went, the vet gave us some soap to wash it 3 times daily and some cream to slather on after it had been washed. It cleared up fine so the best of luck to Ru |
Hugs to Ru
Chauncey was bitten by a dog aggressive Rhodesian mix as an 8 month old puppy. After 2-3 days it was obviously infected, despite cleaning & antibiotic cream, and required oral antibiotics. To be safe inspect Ru's wounds 2-3 times a day. Oh and lots of extra treats and attention |
Poor Ru, I hope he heals quickly. Jenny and I are sending him hugs. |
