I like to give my pups (1 yrs old) a beef hip bone that I buy at Pet supplies plus. They love them and spend hours gnawing them. The problem is that the little one will gnaw them until she starts to chip away at the bone. The fragments are the size of grated italian cheese. Is this a problem? Should I leave her alone or take the bone from her when she gets this far. I know are animals that historically eat what they killed they can handle a certain amount of bone.
I do not think the size of the fragments is a choking hazard, |

Remember wild animals eat raw bones, those that haven't been dried or roasted. Once they've been heated, they become more likely to splinter which causes the problems.
With processed bones, I tossed them when I started to hear them fracture. The raw bones I'd let go a bit longer, but still took them away after awhile. |
