When they got home I noticed that Baxter was limping and it appeared that his front legs were affected. I checked his legs (never really thinking of his pads and couldn't find any area that seemed tender- they seemed fine. Later I noticed him licking the bottom of his paw--he has blisters on both front feet. It was not hot here today, in fact it was a little cooler than normal so I don't think it was heated pavement. The blisters have popped and look very painful. I put some neosporin on both of his feet tonight and he has stopped licking so it may have helped. Has anyone ever had this happen? By the time I discovered what this was the vet was closed and I did not feel that this warranted an emergency call but he is having difficulty walking. |

I'm wondering if he may have walked through something like Poison Ivy or Poison Oak somthing along that line. He may have also been bit by Fire Ants, they can be quick and brutal or some other type of insect that you never saw.
I hope his poor little paw paws fell better soon, poor guy. |
Poor Baxter!!
Sorry I cant help, but I wonder did he run more than usual on hard ground or pull on the lead more so that its a friction type burn. Neosporin was a good idea. Hope that they heal quickly. |
years ago this happened all 4 pads had blisters ouch very painful for my girl she got them from running around the pool i guess she got wet then we took her for her walk and i think the street was too hot.. ended up we had to arap her pads but they were real bad to the point of bleeding.. just stay on soft grass for now |
It wasn't insects or poison ivy or oak--It is definitely blisters. He has really had a tough time walking today. His left front paw seems a little better but the right is pretty wicked looking. I have continued to use neosporin today and late this afternoon used some gold bond powder. I will call the vet tomorrow morning.
Husband insists that they did not do anything different but did walk on the pavement path farther than usual. He said it was wet in spots but that it wasn't that hot and Baxter doesn't pull on the leash. He did say that he walked faster than norman to get some cardio in-- I have just never experienced a dog getting blisters on the pads I guess now I know it can happen. |
Wetness and speed (increased friction) on rough surface can equal blisters even without heat. Seems to happen to certain dogs when running around pools, for instance. Just watch them so they don't get infected and, yes, keep him on soft surfaces for now.
Some dogs have softer pads than others. When I first got Belle she had lived a protected life so as to not do anything to her (show) coat. It took a little time but normal activity toughened up her pads and even when herding on gravel (which she thinks she needs to do at 900 mph ) her pads are fine now. If conditions are just right I imagine even a dog with nice, hardy pads can come up with blisters. Hope they heal soon. Kristine |
I'm thinking friction blisters too. But, part of me can't rule out that there was some substance he stepped in to cause a chemical type blister. Have you washed/soaked his feet just in case there was something he came in contact with? Maybe something soothing, like epsom salts? It would help heal the blisters whatever the cause was too. |
panda got blisters from playing around a pool also...i just used mild soap to clean and neosporin....it took a few days to heal, but she was fine...dont bandage, the blisters need air to dry....just try to keep her from licking them.. |
Ru has had blisters, usually just one but in different places, a few times. Sometimes he runs like crazy on the sandy gravel where we walk, sometimes it's from too much street walking, but they always heal in a few days. He used to get them more when he pulled on the leash. |
Thanks everyone for your responses --very helpful. I did consult with the vet this morning and he confirmed 'friction blisters'. We are continuing with the cleaning and neosporin.
I guess I do need to work to help him toughen his pads. Hopefully he will be back to his bouncy self in a few days! |
Maybe you do need to toughen up the pads?
Once the pads have healed, ask your vet if rubbing them with surgical spirit would help, as this was something I used to toughen my feet up before some long walking trips. How often do you bath your sheepie? is it possible this walk was not long after a bath and maybe the pads were nice and soft? I mainly walk Archie on tarmac and paving slabs, his pads are quite rough, thickened at the base to the touch. Here's wishing Baxter a speedy recovery |
Poor Baxter. Give him a hug from us. I hope he gets better soon. |
