I have the 7-1/2" curved and straight Geib "Entrees" and sis has the 8-1/2" Geib "Gators". We both really like them. A lot.
Don't think you can go wrong with the Geibs. They make shears in different styles and price ranges so there really is something for everyone. Plus, they have a great guarantee if they do the sharpening. |

Best place to buy scissors is at a vendor at a dog show. Important thing is not the price but how they feel in your hand and the knowledge of the person selling you the scissors. Let them know what breed of dog you have & what kind of trimming you are looking to do. They won't sell you the most expensive pair.............they will sell you the best pair for your breed. One side note, go prepared to spend a nice sum of money. We aren't talking about $29.99 scissors. The better the scissors, the more you can do with them & the longer the edge will last before needing sharpening again. |

I get mine sharpened at shows (they have booths like the vendors). You drop it off, and you can pick them up later in the day. Ask around at a show. Sometimes there are more than one sharpener and locals can tell you which one they prefer. I ended up ordering the Geib Gator 8 1/2" straight. It's on sale in the petedge catalog now - at a nice price. It's a Christmas present for LeAnne |

Absolutely! My first shears (10" curved) was purchased at a dog show with the assistance of one of the best OES groomers in the business. It was $200 and wasn't even "top of the line". At that point, I didn't even know how to hold a shears in my hand. (Common mistake: thumb ring fits on your thumb above the first joint (toward the nail) and your ring finger goes in the second ring). Don't be afraid to ask the vendor if the shears are positioned in your hand properly. Then check how they feel in your hand. Vendors are usually more than happy to help. If you don't know of a dog show in your area, there are often Grooming Competitions in the area with great trade shows. We had PetQuest near Cincinnati recently, GroomExpo is coming up in mid-September in Hershey, PA and GA has the Atlanta Pet Fair. Some shows are open only to the trade but you may be able to get a local groomer, vet clinic or training center to help you obtain admission. Or, if you want to meet with a particular vendor who will be attending, contact them and they may extend and invitation to you. Many sharpeners also sell shears and travel around to grooming shops to sharpen clipper blades and shears for them. Maybe there is someone in your area that does this? As a last resort, ordering sight-unseen from a place like PetEdge is good provided they will take a shears back if it doesn't fit properly. In Dawn's case, she's most likely found a shears that fit fine but could be purchased elsewhere for less money. That's the best of all worlds. |
I bought a set of Geib thinning shears ($90) at a show this weekend - and they thru in a set of shears (of my choice) Amazing how different the shears felt between the price points. |
