He is staying overnight at the vet, with fluids and some pain meds. First thing in the morning he will have it removed, by a very good surgeon. I am just beside myself worrying about the poor boy. My biggest concern is that there is no one there overnight. We thought about going to the emergency vet, but the vet told us the emergency clinic in the area usually waits until the morning and sends the dogs to their office or another vet with a surgeon on staff. He thinks Rudie will be fine overnight with the fluids and will probably sleep with the pain meds. My poor baby, I just feel horrible for putting the x-rays off. We didn't even need the barium to see it. Please keep him in your thoughts tonight and tomorrow. |
|
Your vet is correct about the emergency clinics. By staying at your vet's overnight will give him time to get into good shape for the surgery. At least now you know what you are dealing with. Positive thoughts and prayers headed your way for Rudie. Keep us posted! |
Thank god they found it and rudie will be fine overnight, probably will be zonked out and sleepy on the pain killers.
Wishing your baby all the best for the morning and please let us all know how surgery went with rudie. Corn cobs are now baned from your household. They are so dangerous, next time get a can of corn kernels instead not the whole cob while rudie is around. Relax now, he will do fine and all back to normal soon, thinking of you both |
Poor guy. I'm sorry to hear that it was the corncob after all and not something easy. I hope all comes out okay (no pun intended). |
Thanks guys. It really is kind of a relief to finally know what it is. I just wish someone was there with him all night!
On a tangent, I was able to look at the x-rays and asked the vet what he thought of Rudie's hips. He said they look good for the most part, no arthritis and only the right hip shows a sign of possible hip displaysia in the future. So we don't have to worry about that anymore. |
Was this the new vet? If so I think he found a new client. After all this time and thoughts of corn cob, why didn't the old one Xray?? |
I'm so sorry. I hope he feels a lot better after tomorrow. I'm glad you ended up finding it. |
Poor Rudie ....and YOU!!!!!
At least you know what you are dealing with now.... and your vet can take care of it and Rudie will be home again..... Please keep us posted!!! |
Thank goodness you had the X-ray done! All my thoughts will be with you and Rudie Poor pup |

This was the new vet. The old vet suggested an xray but agreed it would be fine to try the antibiotics first to see if it was a bacterial infection. When it cleared up I didn't think it was a problem, but in hindsight I do wish the vet had been as adamant as all you folks about the dangers of cobs!! But yes, I do believe we found ourselves a new vet. Sigh, poor Rudie.. |
Heather, you are so lucky the nagging suspicion something was still wrong made you pursue it further.
I will be saying Rudie prayers and Simon will send the all-healing basset drool his way. |
Crossing all our paws here for a fast recovery for Rudie!
What a saga this has been! Im glad you finally have the answer though..even though its a serious solution, at least you know!!!! |
Special thoughts for Rudie and you! |
Aw, I was hoping it was going to be something easy and not the corn cob. Poor boy. Hope it goes well! |
Good luck Rudie.
Glad you've sorted out what it is though!!! |
It sounds like you found a great vet.
Rudie will do much better with the extra fluids and pain meds - he will tolerate surgery much better. Ben had surgery on Thursday and they kept him until Monday. Fentanyl pain patch, heplock for intermittent fluids and antibiotics. By the time he came home, he was doing great. Our surgeon told us that the intestines heal up in 7 days, but the usual protocol is a low residue diet for 10-14 days post-op. Rather than feed the canned food from the vet, he gave me a recipe that I could use. Quite a bit cheaper. Ask the surgeon about it. I can give you the recipe if you want. Positive thoughts and I can't wait for the post-op update. |
Poor Rudie!!!
Poor Heather!!!!!! I'm sure everything will go well. Let us know if we can help. |
Things will be fine. |
I'm so sorry that it turned out to be the corncob, but at least you now know what the problem is and you can fix it. It could have been much, much worse.
It also makes you become a wiser pet owner. We get sweet corn from local farmers, but the second we are done with the cobs, we bring them outside to the trash can. All items have to be stored away and out of reach of our counter surfer. The kitchen garbage can cannot get too full because of Asterisk nosing open the lid. All the best for Rudie! Keep us posted! |
So sorry Rudie (and you!) are facing this. Big hugs to everyone, and thoughts and prayers are with you. |
Wishing Rudie good luck today and in the next few weeks. I hope it all goes perfectly. Glad to hear his hips look good -- nice piece of news in an otherwise scary time. |
Good luck today, Rudie! I'm sure he'll do fine.
At least you know what's going on now and hopefully it'll be smooth sailing from here on out. |
So sorry to hear it was the corn cob but glad now it can be treated. I wouldn't worry about him staying overnight. vets usually hve someone there a few hours after they close and Rudie will be sleeping, especially with the pain meds.
Unfortunately this surgery is done quite often so I'm sure Rudie will pull through just fine. Now, do they give out medication for the owner to relax! Good Luck Rudie! You will be fine... |
He's out! It was just one small piece of cob and it was in his colon. They tried to get it to pass, but they couldn't so they did have to make an incision. He is doing very well so far and if he can keep water and food down later he can come home tomorrow.
They are taking great care of him, I am so happy with the new vet. Thanks for all the well wishes, Rudie will be very pleased to know so many people were pulling for him. |
Extremely good news! |
Great news.
Kind of a stressful way to find a new vet though...... |
Good news! Heal up fast Rudie! |
WHOO!!! HOO!!!!!
Rudie will be home soon and this will ALL be over!!!!!!! |
Yay! |
YEA!
I'm very happy for you. |
Yeah Rudie! That must have been so scary. Wise forum members we have here! |
So glad to hear Rudie is doing well! |
Yay, way to go Rudie!! Keep getting better fast so you can come home real soon. |
Bailee said some Sheepie Prayers lat night, he will be very happy when I tell him the good news. |
Go Rudie! |
Wellll???? how IS OUR boy?????? |
Yikes! that was a close call. So happy Rudie is on the mend. surprised original vet didn't take an xray, they are pretty easy with digital pictures now. Patch was terribly ill with diarrhea a few weeks ago and i took her in as precautionary measure;a digital picture was taken in about 2 seconds- all was well, she ate something that was too rich. BUT am glad all is well with Rudie and he will be home soon with the fam. |
Good news heather glad it all went well, now crossing fingers water stays down and he can eat with no chuck so he is home ASAP.
Sheepie hugs for Rudie and big cuddles for mom who's stress levels must be going down now & getting even better when your baby is back home. Again so glad they found that darn cob, new vet sounds great. |
So glad Rudie did well! Hope all is fine soon and he will be home with you! |
Vet said he is peppier this morning and is eating again (my little chub). If all goes well he will be home tonight.
I'll post pictures of the cob later |
Great news!! |
So glad Rudie is on the mend! How scary! |
So happy every thing is finally going well. Hope Rudie gets home for cuddles this weekend |
Good news |
Yay for peppier!!! |
He's home He seems to be doing just fine, but that could be the fentanyl patch talking.
The cob is the most horrendous thing I have ever seen or smelled in my life. It was too hideous to get a good picture of. |
Yeah! Rudie is home
Having been through a few surgeries, not for corn cobs but surgeries, your boy will probably do alot of sleeping at home. I think at the hospital its noisy and they are a but stressed. Once home, they relax and can rest and sleep...Sort of like humans after a hopsital stay! Welcome Home Rudie! |
Wonderful news, now you and Rudie both just sit back and relax for awhile |
YAY Rudie!
What wonderful news. Now Mom can finally get some sleep. |
Wonderful news! He's happy to be home and you are happy he is home, all is well now. |
