This bathroom is used by my teenage girls and had white cabinets. My hubby would like to keep the white as it is a small bathroom without a window. He thinks the white makes the room look bigger. I am leaning towards maple cabinets with a toffee stain. We have to replace cabinets, countertop, and flooring. New floor will be tile with taupe and grey tones. Tub and toilet are white. The counter top color is also under debate. Choice 1 is a green color corian type product. I think this green color looks better with the white cabinets. The tile taupe color seems to pick up on the green tones. Choice 2 is a wheat color man made grantit product which I think looks better with maple cabinets. We are not planning on selling our house anytime soon. But while I like the green / white combination and it is my hubby's favorite. I am worried that it will look dated more than the neutral tones of the wheat color. What do you think? I just can't decided. I am trying to stay within my insurance budget which seems difficult because pricing is coming in over budget. Thanks |

I would go for the neutral floor, cabinets, countertop and plumbing.
Though you like the green now, in a few years the color cycle will have moved on and it will be harder to find things to go with that color. I remember Harvest Yellow and Avocado Green, beige & navy, etc. Nickel to chrome to brass to chrome to bronze. Gosh, I'm old. We went with white cabinets, a neutral floor, white plumbing and use the walls/accessories for the color. It's cheap and quick to change it out for a totally different look. I love Corian in the bathroom. We did our shower and countertop (white) -I love it. |
I tend to go neutral on the expensive items and bring the color out with accessories matching some of the colors in the wall colorings. The only exception is I match cabinets to my woodwork. I've redone bath #1 once in 27 years and bath #2 twice in 27 years. Having white fixtures, white countertops and woodgrain cabinets, they still looked like totally different rooms with new wallcoverings and accessories. When we built the house back in '82 I insisted on neutral colors. Our 1st home had "whatever color was on sale" when we bought it! PINK bathroom fixtures! Rest of the house was avacado green/harvest gold era with cream colored painted woodwork . By the time we built I was sick of trying to co-ordinate colors! |
I think I'd go more neutral too. |
I would use the maple cabinet but not stained. Get a natural one. It will be light but that's good for a room with no natural light.
And use the neutral countertop (preferably granite). You will get sick of the green one in a few years. And even thought you don't have plans to sell the house, sometimes you just never know what life will throw you. Better to be ready now than to be unprepared later. I would use brushed nickel fixtures and clear glass frameless door/doors for the shower and/or tub. The closer your tile looks to natural stone, the more value you've put into the house. People LOVE slate, travertine, tumbled marble, and limestone. If you can find ceramic or porceline tiles that look like one of those natural stones, that would be to your benefit. |
the way to make a small room look larger, is to lean toward the monocromatic....all the same tones of the same color....it not only works well with light colors, but can work well with darker shades too.... |
Thanks - I really liked the neutral tones but we have a lot in our house so kids wanted the green. It does not look bad I have just afraid we will get sick of it. I agree I can alway change wall color and bath accessories with minor costs. Now to convince the hubby. The grantit looks great but costs more. |
