More for the You-Can't-Make-This-Stuff-Up category

This is gonna be a bit long, because my heart is still pounding, so bear with me!

First, the background: Sarah lives in VA, about 4 hours away from home. She came home yesterday to drop off Mora (her cat) for us to cat-sit while she goes to CA. Her original plan was to pick up her traveling partner today (who lives in a neighboring town to us), drive back to VA and they are leaving from VA tomorrow morning. Only Michelle told her on Friday that she had to work today, so would drive herself down to VA tonight after work. Now the Y-C-M-T-S-U portion starts.

Sarah left about 10:00 this morning. We stayed in the garage for about 5 minutes and when we came back in the house, we see on the sofa her clothes bag and her computer bag and computer. So I call her to let her know she left stuff home. AACCKK! I hear her cell phone ring – she forgot that, too!! Dale says – I wonder if I can catch her, so he jumps in his car and heads out on the route he thought she would be taking. After he left, I remembered she said she had to stop at Macy’s, so I call him to tell him to check the mall parking lot. No surprise, I hear HIS cell phone ringing up on his desk!! About 25 min later, he comes home, says he couldn’t find her. I tell him about Macy’s and his cell phone, and his face just dropped.

More background: Sarah started seeing a guy in VA named Steve. Sarah called home from Steve’s phone last week-end because her phone died, so his name and number are on our Caller ID.

More Y-C-M-T-S-U: I grab the phone and call Steve. Never met the guy yet, never talked to him, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I explain the situation and said I didn’t know if she would miss her stuff before she got too far away, but that if she did get all the way back, could he please meet her at her house and tell her to call me to give me Michelle’s address. I would drive her stuff to Michelle’s and have her bring them to VA for Sarah. If, by some chance, she would miss the stuff and come back home first, I would have her call him.

Then I put her stuff in my car and head for the mall, thinking maybe I could catch her there. Told Dale to call me (yes, I do have MY cell phone with me!) if she comes home. Well, she DID miss her stuff and came home from the mall, so I double-backed. She told Dale he wouldn’t have found her on the highway because she went to the mall the back way – doh! When I got home, she laughed and said she called Steve and he said – your mom sounded a bit panicked – YA THINK?? I knew she wouldn’t want to be without both her phone AND computer for a week and especially because I knew she wanted to bring them to CA. She thought the Michelle plan was a good one, said she was sorry, and off she went – again.

Honestly! That girl would forget her head if it wasn’t screwed on!! And all this from the girl who keeps saying "I'm an adult now!!"

OMG Chris what a mess.

I am not surprised that you sounded panicked. (I would have been too!)

I am not surprised Dale drove off without his phone. (Tim would have done that one too - and that would have irritated me.)

I am also not surprised that your daughter was more laid back about it than you were. (That would have been my son versus me.)

You need a good drink after that fiasco. You got all worked up and it wasn't even your trip.
That would be completely hilariously if it weren't so stressful! I am glad it all worked out. Where was she planning on spending the day after going to Macy's?

She was heading back to VA after Macy's. My fear was that she wasn't going to miss the stuff at home right away, but would miss them a few hours out when she stopped for gas, or something. Then - would she have turned back after being half-way there? Who knows, with my kid!!

Judi, Sarah was more laid back ONLY because she remembered them before she left the area. If she had not remembered them and found Steve camped on her doorstep when she got home, and THEN was told everything was in PA - she would have FLIPPED!! One thing my daughter generally is NOT is calm!!

WOW 8O I would have been so scared. I'm glad everything came together
Thankfully she noticed the missing stuff - but how far did she get??
back in the day, before cell phones, my father who was a NYC cop would sometimes - er - well - forget his service revolver when he would leave from our place in upstate NY after a long weekend and head back to NYC for work without it. I have been known to take off with it under the seat of my car and drive really really fast and catch him on the hiway - phew when you stop and think about all the things wrong with that scenario....

My point is - they don't always grow out of it - sorry.
My question is -- if she forgot her clothes, computer, computer bag and phone-- what did she actually pack???? !!!!! LOL.

The mall where Macy's is is about 10 miles away from home, so she hadn't left the area yet, thankfully!

She only brought pj's and a few things home yesterday - this was not her trip packing clothes.

When she left the mall, she said she went for her phone in her purse to call Steve to tell him she was leaving PA, and couldn't find her phone. So she thought she put it in the clothes bag (which she did!) and looked in the back seat for it, but of course, it wasn't there. Then she figured she left it all at home and came back, at the same time that I was heading to the mall to find HER!

Kerry, I have no doubt that this girl is one of those people who won't outgrow forgetting stuff. Last time she was home, she went to Philly to visit friends for a day and left her camera there. Then, when she left to go back from that trip, I found her toothbrush and toothpaste still in the bathroom.

Oy.

I knew as soon as she forgot the cell phone she wouldn't go far. 8)
