Reoccuring Worms

Has anyone out there had a problem with worms reoccuring?

When we brought Scribbles home from the rescue they said she was full of worms but had been medicated. Next day there was a whole load of dead worms. No more problems, or so I thought. Fast forward about two weeks ago, angel hair pasta (as my 5 year old notified me) in her stool. Took a sample to the vet and once again was medicated and next day dead worms in stool and next few movements were clear. Well, woke up today to another present full of the crawly creatures.

Is this normal? She is eating only Iams Large Breed or Puppy Chow dry food with one can of Pedigree Puppy wet food daily. No other problems or concerns that I know of. Is growing and growing and from I imagine a normal amount of energy.

I do have cats and I have had to shoo her away from the litter box, but as I know of the cats have never had any problems with worms.

Any help would be apprectiated. Thanks!

When deworming is done it should be done again no later than ten days later. The medication kills adults but not larvae, so you need to re med to make sure you get hatching larvae before they lay eggs too.
I'm surprised your vet didn't do this....
Thanks Willowsprite. Neither time did my vet recommend a second dose and of course it being Saturday they are not available until Monday morning. They do have an emergency number but not quite sure if this qualifies as an emergency.

Do you think I can wait until Monday AM to get her medicine again?
Hi,

Poor little Scribbles. Give the little one a belly rub for me.

I can perhaps quess why this is reoccuring as my vet told me why Merlin kept getting reoccuring bouts of worms when he was younger. (I still have him deworked as a precaution.) The reason for Merlin was our daily visits to the offleash dog park. My vet explained that dogs will often step in others dogs poop and then lick their paws. You can't be sure the other dogs have been dewormed and the pup will get it from their feces. Another thing I remember reading is it could even (with some worms) the larvae is in the previous poop of your dog which now lays in your backyard. Some I believe can remain dormant during the cold weather in the poop and what resembles awakening when warm weather starts. ( I could be wrong about this as I read about it last year.) Or perhaps this is happening on your walks with Scribbles?

It's why I became adament that I pick up the stuff in the backyard and gently remind people at the offleash dog park by asking "oh do you need a bag?" Most newcomers to the dogpark don't realize they are supposed to pick up their dogs droppings as they figure it's a dog park but the regulars whom use it everyday do this faithfully.

It's now been a while for for some reason I thought my medication required me to give the additional dose 3 wks later. ( I quess it might depend on the type of worm?)

Lastly, cats can get worms by licking themselves and then digesting the flee egg which turns into worms (those rice segment looking ones.) A dose of advantage on the pets and then repeated 3 wks later should cure that problem.

Good luck and hope I helped. Please check with your vet however as I'm unsure of the time frame for doses.

Marianne
Thanks for the reply Marianne.

Unfortuntely, I do not have an offleash dog park in our vincinity. I also have two spoiled pups who will not do their business in my fenced backyard so we go for many leashed walks daily. I always pick up after my babies but can't say the same for other dog owners (I can't even convince my babies dad to pick up after them - but they also rarely if ever do #2 for him!?)
I do my best to make sure they do not get into anything but sometimes If am not fast enough, Scribbles gets into trouble. I usually wipe off their paws this time of year when returning to the house because of all the salt and icemelters on the sidewalks.
I didn't realize that you could continue treatment for worms even if they are not present. I don't think my other dog Doodles has ever had treatment other then before we brought him home. I am going to have to discuss with my vet on Monday. I just can't imagine having those crawling around inside her tummy. She does seem fine today though, a bit less entergetic than usual and if I didn't know she had the worms I would think that was a good thing!
Thanks again - I really appreciate that you took the time to answer my dilemma.
Have the other two dogs and cats been checked for worms? If not, they may be your problem.

Also have you ever caught your dog eating it's own poop??

What kind of worms did the vet say you dog has??
I have two dogs total. My silky terrier Doodles has not been checked since last year but I have never had a problem with him in six years. My cats have not been checked since they were kittens but again they do not go outside and I have never seen a problem.

When I took the sample in last time I asked the vet tech if I should bring in the other animals samples and she said it wasn't necessary if I did not see worms in their stool and I have not.

Scribbles does not eat her own stool but I have caught her taking the stool out of the cats litterbox. Can't say I ever saw her eat it but I don't see everything she does.

She did not name the type of worm. It looks like angel hair pasta.

Thanks for your feedback. I am calling my vet first thing in the A.M. I have not seen any worms (dead or alive) in Scribbles stool since the bowel movement yesterday morning. She slept a little more than usual yesterday but today is full steam ahead.
