Tilly my 10month old is starting to get brown hair. I dont understand she is groomed every day, has a natural pet food. what is causing this brown hair? i read whilst looking at the breed that it is undis..... what can i do to stop this? HELP.................. |

I've been told brand of food can cause coloring as well. My dog had very brown hair as well but it seemed to go away once the adult coat came in. To be honest, I loved the brown hair and wouldn't mind if it stayed |
According to breed standard, brown is an undesirable coat color. Fear not, your pup's coat is transitioning to the adult coat. Puppy hair often gets faded and sun bleached before coming in gray.
Mrs. J. .... I know someone who wouldn't be happy if your dog's coat stayed brown. |
Yes brown hair is not allowed according to the standard. What is most likely happening is the end of the puppy coat is turning brown due to sun damage - either wait until it all is groomed out or trim it down and voila - no more brown hair.
If its brown at the roots, that's a no no. |

She was in the paper for sale, and we thought we would just check her out. Oh my. That poor thing was living outside in a make shift kennel, and was mud from head to toe. Such a sweetie she was. Came right up to us- I gave her a hug- she smiled. I said-- "We want her". She jumped in the back of the car and we never looked back. When we took her the next day to have her shaved down, several hairs were brown to the root. She was spayed and I didn't care if she was purple, we loved her so much. With Max, we were older , wiser, and well informed. There was a gray puppie in his litter though. I never knew what that meant until just recently-- when I read a post on here. Hard not to love 'em. No matter what color of the rainbow they are |
Oh I agree. I think most people who come here aren't necessarily looking for their dogs to be perfect, just if it meant something was wrong. |
That browning of puppy coat is frustrating when you want to show though. Went through it with Piper, I was NOT happy about it. She's just going to have to be shown as an adult *shrug* Now she has been trimmed way down and has to wear sunscreen to keep her beautiful blue-grey. |
Brown coat in a puppy is often just dead coat. This too shall pass. Like Stacey said, it's a pain if you're showing them. I just shave and wait for the adult coat to come in. I don't have the patience to live through that kind of ugly. It's going to come out anyway, so why not help it along. <buzzzzzzzzz>
Plus the dead coat is responsible for a lot of the matting they go through at various ages depending on where they are in the coat changes. So it doesn't hurt and can save your back if you just clip them down. Kristine |
Yep - Chewie and I are living, breathing proof there is success in waiting. He started out just fine, but then his body decided to keep that puppy hair. It took a long time, but he grew a decent coat after all that black-turned-brown puppy coat finally left. Whoever knew I would get the puppy that wanted to keep his FOREVER though!!
But, I did get a puppy who had a brain and liked training right off the bat, so I really can't complain. |

Oh I didn't mean to come across like that at all!!! I didn't even know enough when we got Corrine to question her coat! Sorry if my post sounded different than I meant it. |

At the same time, if you're getting a brown dog, you're dealing with someone who isn't breeding to better the breed so it's pretty fair to assume they aren't doing any kind of health testing or running a decent breeding program. So, it could definitely mean something could be wrong later. |
