Keep walking together, keep together. Try a command at a time until he masters it.
For the first month or so you'll ask yourself, "What have I gotten into to?" By you being a reliable leader and gently showing him certain actions are not tolerated, you'll grow in stature in his eyes. Right now he's tickled pink to be out of the kennel and can't contain himself. He's showing neurotic behavior. Keep him well stocked in chew items.....it's like a cigarette to a doggie, it is calming. If he's chewing himself, think allergies, buggies, ....or neurosis. He's got 3 years of attention to catch up on, poor guy. Now you can't pity him, just be a gentle drill instructor teaching him his new behaviors. |
Just a note about this guy He was my foster He was left in a home for 6 mos ,probably crated or in the garage. His hind end was weak and he is cow hocked. He improved a great deal with me I only had him a week He learned how not to potty in the house (he just randomly peed in the house no poops he went out with my gang) He was afraid of us but it only took him 5 days to learn to play with toys and just what treats were He was sooo skinny and matted I pulled two grocery bags of mats out of him but he was still pretty bad No barking behaviors here only after Pat had him groomed He is neked now Maybe just a wierd sheepie thing now being neked I think the previous owners had to have him shaved. He is a very sweet and passive guy but we all know behaviors change once they settle in I bet he barked a lot at his old home being left 24/7 with someone feeding him. Pat has offered him a loving home but since she is in an apartment (she has another sheepie) she can not have him barking. Chandler is just a sweet boy. I told Pat she would get lots of good advice here
WELCOME PAT,DAWSON AND CHANDLER |
Welcome to the community! I'm glad you're here and THANK YOU for rescuing a sheepie in need! |
Welcome Pat! I am new to the community myself and have found nothing but warmth and support from everyone!
As far as your barking sheepie.. someone once told me "A tired dog is usually a good dog" So just making for sure he is getting plenty of exercise! It sounds like he was never taken on regular walks and wasnt exactly a pampered pooch at his former home I know if my sheeper doodle misses a walk he's nutty... bouncing around the house, barking at me to play, wont leave me alone lol.. we try to avoid that at ALL costs! Good luck to you with your new baby! Keep us posted on how things turn out!!! |
If the dog has the energy (and you also) then exercise exercise exercise is the best thing for a bored dog, which is probably what he is telling you with his barks, when Archie is bored this is how he lets me know generally, oh and occasionally dropping his collar at my feet.
Good luck, it is early days for both of you, you'll soon adapt to each other routines. |
welcome to the forum and I am sure you will get sorted out soon....xx |
