Ginger snap cookie? Ginger has a calming effect on motion sickness. Works for some people and some dogs. Just one or two every few hours might help. Have you tried putting them into covered kennels within the car with only viewing to the front. Eliminating the side and back motion might help. |
We used to keep Kobe in the front seat of our car, on the floor. She still hacked, panted, smacked her mouth until she vomited and we never could get her to just lie down and go to sleep. However, when we got our jeep, we started putting her in the very back. Now she just lays down, doesn't have to see anything out the windows (she is a bit shorter than OES) and doesn't have a problem. We also don't feed her before we drive, which helps a little, but we've thankfully never taken her on any several-hour trips.
It seemed to help to keep the vehicle cool (uncomfortably, for me!). I'm sure taking a trip is bound to take up the back of any SUV or van with luggage, if they are driving one to begin with...but just a thought. |
Thanks for the advice. At this point we will try anything. They fly well, which baffles me (not on the airlines but in a private plane) Once the plane lands, 5 minutes in the car and 1 or either are sick. We have a 2 hour drive thru the mountains after we land so I am really wanting to try out some remedies before we go. |
My dog growing up would get sick (and it was annoying...no matter how long the trip, she'd wait until the very end. You'd be in the car for 2 hours and think you're in the clear, and then 5 minutes later she'd puke).
Anyways, the only thing that worked for us was for her to ride shotgun, in the front passenger seat, all buckled in... |
Firstly go back to basics with them, that is let them sit in the car, no engine on and take them out after a few minutes, then progress to the sitting in the car with the engine going. After that just a short trip around the block and so on and so on till they are use to the car and distance without chucking..
Ginger works well for motion sickness and so does an essential oil, mist peppermint oil through the car, put a few drops in a water bottle with water and mist the interior. With the ginger you can give it to them in a cookie or drug stores sell them in tablet form, you have to give it to them 20 mins or so before travelling. Start back at basics with them step by step in the car in conjunction with ginger and the essential oil. Sometimes it is not down to motion sickness it is excitement of being in the car that can make them chuck so take both steps with them and start again back at the basics with the car and travelling. |

There is some evidence in humans at least that eliminating peripheral vision helps prevent motion sickness. If they cant see out in the plane but they can in the car then maybe that's why they're fine in a plane. It may be worth trying the covered crate option above. |
