Chewing = Hairballs?!

Hey everyone! So Beemer is my first OES and I must say, I didn't quite realize how much work they actually are! When I got him a little over a year ago he was completely shaved down. Now.. his coat is long and beautiful, I brush him on a regular basis so he doesnt get matted, and he is bathed once every few weeks or so.
Lately he has been chewing on his body.. not to the point where he's becoming raw, but still chewing and I would imagine he's eating some hair? He doesnt have fleas... I think its possibly because of all that hair? Anyway.. last night he was coughing like he was trying to get something up. Then this morning he was kind of breathing funny for a bit. He seems fine, I am just freaked out. Do sheepdogs get hairballs and does this sound familiar to anyone? If so, what do I do?!
Thanks so much!!

Yes... I have a chewer.... I have to keep her shaved down, if her hair gets to be more than an inch long she eats it and gets hairballs. She never chewed to the skin either.
Jack is chewer too. Never skin, just the hair. He's kept short or else he'd have gooey/gummy dreadlocks and I'd be finding hunks of gooey/gummy barfed up hair balls around the house.

If yours is going after the skin, think hot spots, allergies.

If he is going after the hair in the rub sections, it's OK to keep that haved down.
