The host clubs had conformation, obedience, rally, and a weight pull. Saturday we entered the weight pull, obedience and conformation. Chewie already is a UKC champion in conformation, but they give a versatility award called Total Dog and we wanted to try for that. By winning in conformation and at least one of the performance events, you can get a Total Dog award. Obedience was a dive - Chewie has NO brain right now. Sister Martha lives wth us now (as well as LeAnne and the family) and she is 2 weeks into heat......need I say more???! All he did was sniff the grass for girls! Thankfully, weight pull still worked. He pulled 1274# and got 2nd place in his class. In conformation he was the only OES, but took a Group 2! And, as the host club was the GSD club, no one was too shocked when the GSD that beat us went on to take BIS. We got our Total Dog award - one of only 2 dogs in the whole show Today we just skipped obedience - no sense untraining my trained dog........ We again did well in weight pull - a little less, as he was tired from doing weight pull, obedience and conformation the day before, plus the 2 hr drive to and from the show site. He doesn't wake up well at 4:30 am either! He pulled 1190# and got 2nd place again - I was more than happy with that. We had conflicts wih the breed ring today. We went in for breed (only OES again), then whipped the harness on, and pulled the hair up and ran to our weight pull round. I have pictures coming later of me doing weight pull in my show clothes Then running back to do group (UKC does each group right after the breed winners in each group are awarded). We whip off the harness, do a quick body fluff, take out the topknot and refluff, fly into the ring......... and take the Group 1!!! Yay - we beat the GSD this time!! ....and........ pull the hair back up, tug the harness on, run back to weight pull for our round. They are once again waiting for us, asking "how did you do?" and I proudly waved our blue rosette and everyone (weight pull judge included) gave us a standing ovation We had been passing (skipping) every other round in the weight pull - not something we usually do - to gain time from running back and forth. So, every round increased weight by double the amount for Chewie over what it normally would have. I think the whole chaos kind of messed with him a bit....although he still was his laid back self. Then we had a nice break, ate lunch (Chewie got a burger too!), before going back in for Best in Show. Chewie normally doesn't really get into the breed ring (an understatement for those that have seen him at a show ), but it was a nice cool (70's), breezy day. He was seeming to really enjoy himself. Well, we pulled it off, and he WON! I have a couple pictures - better ones are coming........ and Chewie liked his awesome ribbon UKC does not allow grooming products in a dog's coat - and they DO enforce it! It was kind of nice prepping by just brushing, and fluffing the head coat. I didn't even bring my table or tack box with..... Kind of fun travelling light. |

Congratulations Chewie and Dawn!!!! That is awesome! I can just imagine you running back and forth between rings, putting in and taking out top knots, fluffing hair, etc. |
Chewie is my hero on this board. |
Congratulations Chewie and Dawn!!! Your narrative was fantastic. The anticipation built to such a crescendo that I yelled out loud when I read that you'd done it!! Bravo!! What an exhausting weekend for the both of you and what a well deserved award!! You two are amazing!! |
Oh Chewie, you surely are Super Dog!
Who says OES are just beautiful balls of fluff? They can kick butt too! Here's hoping your herding career is as successful. |
I know it did make our breed judge smile. She was very aware of my racing back and forth. Pretty hard to hide the fact you are doing weight pull....when you appear ringside and are getting a harness on or off the dog
She was talking to a group of GSD people over lunch, and I listened in. She looked young, but man, she was a great dog person. She was big into structure and genetics and was giving an impromptu talk on the merits of all that. The need for good feet and legs, spine angulation (big controversy in show GSDs), coats, pigment, bone and structure. Why dogs need this to do their jobs and hobbies. And why some traits need to be in the genetic backgrounds so they aren't lost to the breed. |
Woo hoo! That's awesome! |
Chewie, Abracadabra wants your pawtograph. |
Yay, Chewie!!!:hearts:
Congrats to any OES who doesn't need to take a tack box with! |

Congrats to any OES who doesn't need to take a tack box with! Quit dissing my WITH's BTW, I used my new OES LL Bean bag I won at Sheepiepalooza. It worked great. I had my brushes comb and spray bottle in the pouches, his show lead, regular collar and lead, and weight pull harness in the main part. Also had a towel for "just in case", dog food, treats, my water bottle and trail mix, camera, phone and wallet!!! It worked for all my sports in one bag for the weekend. |
Nice job guys! |
Is there anything that boy can't do????? Congrats both of you. He is such a good boy too. You guys look great! |
