Outside of always saying "BE CAREFUL" or whatever WORD you use to make the dog aware of the puppy... I've found there is NOTHING will prevent my dogs from being excited and stepping wherever the heck they want to. The good news is, I think they get "better" at where they step though.
Your little dog will also learn how to stick up for herself and bite the crap out of the sheepie (which will most likely not effect or hurt your dog ...just pull out loads of hair). We've learned that no toys that cause fights, jealousy, etc... come out while both of them are out. We either hold one of them while the other gets to retrieve the ball, throw one outside, or just give it to the big dog and say tough to the small one. That's at least my experience. |
I never let my older dogs have free reign with the puppies - even when we brought in the Newf puppy who was almost as big as them
let them be in the same space - but the puppy belongs up in the air with your daughter until its a little older. |
well holding her is not a problem for my daughter I keep telling her God gave her 4 legs for a reason! LOL I just wish Holly would chill for a minute b/c this little girl would love to play with her! I think Holly would like it too b/c she misses Panda Bear terribly
Well if anyone else has had experience please feel free to comment! |
patience is what is needed. I wouldnt leave the pup with the big dog, not worth the risk. They will be inseperable like my little and large just you wait.. |
ktb I was hoping you would reply you have a sheepie and a small yorkie, right? How did you introduce them and how long did it take them to become best buds? |
I had rabbits that were about 5x larger than this puppy.
I'd teach Holly that she has to lie down when interacting with the puppy while the human holds it. Use a command like "gentle". If she stands up, the play stops and the puppy goes away. No pawing either or rough nosing. There's such a huge difference in size so you'll need to be extremely diligent in protecting the puppy from accidental harm from an exuberant OES. Be careful too that nothing is tipped over on the puppy... the lady down the street does rescue and two kittens came in last week that had serious head injuries due to a fan falling on them. They're just so tiny. Do we get to see a picture of the new baby? |
Okay look under my pics for the pic of my daughter's new puppy, Bella, she is 11 wks. old and 1lb. 10oz. |
I just saw your new pup is a shih tzu, and thought you'd appreciate these pics of our dog getting along with a dog just as small. We had a small maltese with OES', but this is when I babysat my sil's puppies.
