Silly question

My mom thinks that Gigi and Bogey get along because they are the same breed. I don't think they know they are both OES. Gigi gets along with all dogs. Is it possible for dogs to recognize another dog who is the same breed?

I feel silly asking but mom made me. HA!

I think it is possible they recognize each other - I don't think it makes them always get along though :D
I always wondered the same thing - my thought is they wouldn't necessarily understand the concept of 'breed' but maybe the mannerisms are so familiar to them - since they are their own! I have wondered the same thing, so looking forward to seeing others thoughts on this as well :)
Absolutely! I think they recognize their own breed. I've seen it happen at dog shows & just in dogs that come here for grooming. As for always liking each dog of that breed...........same as people. Not all dogs like each other......no matter what the breed.
hmmm, I know Great Pyrs and other LGD (livestock guardian dogs) seem to have an innate distrust/hatred of wolf-like dogs. Maybe this is genetic...to keep the flocks protected.

Also my one Pyr bitch would melt when another Pyr boy would come around but remain aloof if another male dog or any other breed showed up.

I really makes no sense, but maybe there's something in mannerisms, as state above, that puts them at ease. Other dogs distrust OES for lack of tail and hidden eyes......that I understand.
My OES get along on a different level, like they already had a deep understanding of one another, even when one was just a puppy. It was very cool to watch them grow together.
Yes, I really think so too...for the same reasons already mentioned: mannerisms, body language, general look...Ive really noticed that my dogs respond strongest to 1-other OES 2-other "woolly" breeds (such as wheatens, or doodles) and 3-other herding breeds

Respond strongest doesnt always mean "like" though...Abby definitely seems to feel her "I am in charge you will do as I say" privileges are strongest with other OES! 8O
I also feel that the dogs seem to know if the other dog is from their breed. My two Aussies are like bookends. China we adopted at 8 wks and she is now 5 1/2 yrs. Asia, who is China's niece, we adopted last year and she is 2 yrs old now. The two of them are almost inseparables.

When we first brought Asia home at 9mts China would always leave a little food on her plate when she was done eating. I would watch her look straight into Asia's eyes and Asia would come over to China's plate and finish her food. I still am amazed watching the two of them.

Recently, I took Violet to the last day of Agility for the Aussies. I wanted to see what she would do seeing two OESes Duffy and Dreamer. The boys where really interested in her....Duffy so much wanted to get up into her face. It was fascinating to watch.

I'm looking forward to meeting Bogie and Gigi soon. :D
I think they know....

..I remember taking Heart to a puppy class with a bunch of Goldens...all the goldens played together and would sit (almost) in a row staring at her. She would look up at me, like....'WHAT THE HE@@????" And she would begin to get up and they would all scatter!!!! Poor Heart!!!!

When we first started going to events for the OES Club, Heart would just get out there and play!!!!! YES...they KNOW!!!! :D
ohhhh now i have to tell my she is right. thanks for all the info.
gigi was in puppy kindergarten and is in obedience now and there are no oeses.

well we wil see how she does at cozette's birthday party. bogey, so far, likes all dogs.

bogey had shots this morning and is little tired this afternoon. gigi has been lying next him all day. soooo cute.
From what I've observed, at a distance dogs recognize outlines and our breed's tends to be quite distinct. A friend's rescue OES is in the same obedience class as Sybil. Her owner usually arrives late, but when they walk in the door Sadie can scan the building and even though we are at the furthest reaches of a large building amid lots of other dogs you can see the instant she recognizes another OES (I don't always have Sybil in the class) and she always starts pulling her towards us.

She's a bit of a special case anyway as she spent the first ten months of her life at her breeder's, and by the state she was in I use that term loosely. When my friend first got her she was very reactive towards other dogs - except other sheepdogs. Those she always, but always, wants to play with. We've speculated that she was raised exclusively with other sheepdogs. She's had to be socialized with other dogs one step at a time, but walked into my menagerie from day one like she owned the place. She still believes that Sybil is her personal plaything.

A couple of weekends ago she was entered in rally. I was entered in breed at the same show and grooming with a handful of other OES people. Same thing. Place was packed with other dogs but she picked out the OES and made a beeline our way. She's never met one she didn't like and assumes every one of them will want to play with her. Other dogs are still on a case by case basis. It's been really interesting to observe.

I think they know...and this hurts Keira's feeling to no end. Since Liz came to live with us, Pirate clearly prefers to play with her over Keira. I feel really badly for Keira. Sometimes I'll "busy" Liz away from Pirate and Keira so she can play with her brother. But his preference is definately for Lizzie to be his playmate.
We do an occassional OES Day here in Atlanta at one of the dog parks. And every time, all the OES will congregate with one another, and exclude most other breeds. Its a big park and they can run and play where they want and with whom they want; and they always play and run with the other OES.

So I'm going to say YES, they recognize a bond of some kind.
I think dogs can recognise other breeds too!

When I had my first dalmatian and a lab/kelpie cross there was one dog (a cross breed, forget what) at the park who was happy to play with all the dogs including my lab but he absolutely hated my dalmo and would have a go at him.
His owner told me he hated all dalmatians ever since he'd been attacked by one 5 years earlier and that he could recognise them at a distance.
Interesting.
Brick doesn't seem to recognize other Airedales. If he really does, then I guess he wants nothing to do with them. The few times another one has been at the dog park, he is totally indifferent to them.
But he LOVES huskies and malamutes. Don't know why, but he is drawn to them like a bug to light. And he is fond of boxers as well. He seems to play very well with boxers. But huskies & malamutes are like a drug to him I guess.

I don't know about Zeke. He's kinda in la-la land most of the time.

That sounds a bit like my Mad. I'm quite sure she can recognize other OES, she could just care less. Show her a border collie, however, and she's happy-happy. She met her first BC when she was just a puppy and she was in absolute awe and followed him around like a lovestruck teeny-bopper. There was agility equipment present so he didn't even SEE her, but that didn't stop her from worshipping him

Mind you, she doesn't play like an OES either, all rough and tumble. She just runs around barking at the offenders, rounding them up and bunching them together     Maybe she feels that deep down she was born a border collie - she certainly works more like one -and she's hoping I'll get a clue and offer her a breed-change operation

We'll have to arrange a playdate for her and Keira. Keira is the quintessencal BC!
