I think they're a great choice, and whenever animal planet has a "best dogs to own around the world" ...that one wins in the UK. I would love to have one myself if they didn't shed. They make great lap dogs! |
^^^^
My sister does have one and she is sweet, but annoying in her need to always be with you (really worse than my guys) But there are serious health issues and they need to be checked for, not something many breeders seem to do if I understand the issue. I would check with the breed club first. |
Around here, we are seeing some bad ones. Mostly as a result of BYB's capitalizing on the breed's popularity.
Please, have them check with a reputable breeder. One of my neices was looking into the breed last year (they held off on getting a dog in the meanwhile) and there were lots of crap breeders out there. I did contact 2 breeders at a show, they were great and had some young adult dogs they were looking to place. That would be an excellent route to take. |
There are some really serious health problems in the cavaliers .... I believe it has been reported that fully half of them have a serious life threatening genetic heart defect that affects them by 5 years of age, and nearly ALL of them by ten years, 1/3 of them or more have a neurologic disease that is horrible to see, causing the dog to die a slow, agonizing death if not pts.
Definitely important to research breeders with any breed but especially one with so many serious problems. http://www.cavalierhealth.org/ |
Having read many of the posts on this site since coming onboard, I know that there is a wealth of great information among its members. I really appreciate the input so far and have already forwarded this rather alarming health issue to my son. Thank you. |
My good friend has one and she loves him to death. Very loyal and affectionate, although he DOES need to be with her ALL the TIME. She got him from a reputable breeder, but he too got diagnosed with a heart issue (not sure specifics). He was about 4 when diagnosed? Very sweet dog, though, for a LITTLE dog |
My next door neighbor has 3 and they are healthy and happy dogs. They do have a need to be with her 100% of the time and she spends most of the day with her dogs. She stays at home and has the time to do this. Her breeder is in Atlanta and she says that she will always go back to that breeder as there are so many King Charles with major health issues.
She helped a friend of mine get on a waiting list for a dog from this particular breeder. I think my friend waited almost two years for a puppy. I don't know the name of that breeder but will be happy to ask her if you would like the name. Just PM me if your son wants the name of this particular breeder. |
My brother got a beautiful, healthy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel from Kelli Marshall, who is located near Newtown PA. Her e-mail is kmarsh7 at verizon dot net. |
I have five cavalier king charles spanials. The info/replies given are perty much true.Have not had any health issues, but mine tend to dig after goffers in yard, and try to sit in my lap at same time.If you are still looking for a breeder you can go to the akc site and find tha cavaliar king charles spanial club of america and go to their referral list. |
My brothers pair needed oiling! they don't half squeek!
yap yap yap yap. They didn't like Archie they were intimidated by his size and bounceyness They are not Velcro dogs however! they are Magnetic dogs! |
They are known for heart valve problems.
Marilyn Mayfield, the OESCA AKC Delegate, used to breed OES, now breeds Caviler's. This would be an excellent choice for you to contact. She lives, i believe in California. |
